Opinions on the Asp scout

Am out in Hip 9774 - Very nice Empire system that stocks pretty much all modules as far as I am aware, has a good supply of ships and two very nice planets in close prox to the station. (I found lots of rare materials on a cliff overlooking Zoline Lab)

So, I decided to buy an Asp scout to bookmark the system, am pleasantly surprised with it's handling in low level flying.. Been awhile since I used the Asp explorer. Is anyone else with more experience loving or hating the ship? I've only had an hour or so at the controls.

Cheers

Sell the shields, pile on the armour, fit heat sinks, enable silent running and kill other ships to death with multi cannons

I guess I could give it a try, tbh the Python is my main ship for mindless violence. Was contemplating using the Scout as a short range explorer.

Btw, I'm talking about the new Asp scout, not the DBX scout.. I thought the DBX was the best stealth combat ship?

It's a really really fun ship, I wish it was a little more ship for the price tag (not that it really matters at this point, but it doesn't fit the bill), but the handling is good, the capacitor is good, the sounds are great and it handles pretty well around planets. It's a bit slow for some people's taste, but overall it's very fun to fly.

I may be wrong, but it looks for everyday use the Cobra MK III is better. Same guns, more cargo, faster, very similar Jump Range. The Cobra is also just much much cheaper.

Don't know if you saw this, kinda shows of the pilot more than the ship, but a bit the ship.

Yeah, the bigger distributor is really what sets the Scout up a bit more, it also feels like it yaws better to me (but I haven't been in my cobra in a long while), but it is very expensive compared to other ships with similar internal offerings.

Yeah kind of a let down with internal space and utility mounts, especially with the landing hangar taking up another slot

Could have gotten one at Lembava and then flown to Diaguandri to finish outfitting it. That's where I bought one in the Beta and I too was pleasantly surprised. I've been using an ICourier as a taxi, CG turn in ship for awhile now. I'm considering replacing it with the Asp Scout since weight doesn't tank it's range like it does with the ICourier. With A thrusters it's slower (about the same as an AspX with D actually), but it dances almost as well and can't be mass locked by a lot of ships that'll mass lock an ICourier.

In combat, I found it better than a Cobra Mk III actually. More maneuverable and the higher rated power distributor means more DPS with the same hardpoint layout. More fixed friendly and better fsd range too. What it's lacking is the Cobra's boost speed which is almost a non issue against NPCs. Doesn't handle as well as a vulture, but handles well enough.

It should be better as the Cobra cost around 400,000 Cr and the Asp Scout costs around 4,000,000 Cr. My problem with it, is whether it's worth that extra money.
If it's meant to be a combat ship, the Vulture isn't that much more but is far superior in a fight.

That's true. The prices for smaller ships just seem to be getting higher and higher. They keep adding all these new ships as interrim ships, but aren't taking the prices into account.

Yep, looks a bit like Lakon tried to imitate the Cobra Mk III... and failed ;)

FD did a good job with the design of the new ships. Too bad they somehow over-balanced them, so most of them are just plain worse than existing models.

The Viper Mk4, Corvette and Cutter are more or less ok and useful.
The Cobra Mk4, Keelback and Asp Scout otoh are just crap.

The Keelback when it has a Fighter bay and multiplay will be interesting, but not yet. As for the other, yep I agree.

Yup, handling seems very good, especially with the FA disabled, responsive without feeling like an arcade game... Nothing quite like having the terrain rushing below your feet on a Canyon run.

At the very least it's made me want to go pick up my Explorer Asp. I'll start kitting out scouts around local space, makes a nice change from my other scout ships.

Cheers

I wish the Scout was more in keeping with the military ethos of the Mk. II - i.e. a lot faster than the present incarnation. Seems 'un-Elite' to get more of a 'speed rush' from a Python...

I think it's underspecified for the price, but is certainly fun to fly. More speed, or internals, or a mix of the two would help justify the price IMO.

I looked @ this ship as a possible upgrade from my diamondback scout....decided it was a sideways move at best, and didn't bother ;)
