Optimalization for OR for release

Reading the VR forums, I was wondering if there is any word from devs about further optimalization for Rift users towards Dec 16? Or how often during beta did you see any significant improvements towards Rift usage?

I mean there are some cons when using Rift in ED that are fixable or tweakable on ED side, so I wouldnt want to see that I buy rift and there is not gonna be any significant optimalization effort by the devs in ED, or just the update period is gonna be like half a year or something.

I think we can agree that even DK2 has some hardware shorbacks it's still NOT fully used in ED, so it has some more potential for better experience, right?

It's probably not on their primary list of things to fix before release of the game to be honest. You have to figure that while we're a greedy bunch (VR users), yes.. the consumer headset is not released, and as such, isn't exactly "officially supported" and is in an "experimental" phase currently.

With that being said, I would very so much love some improvements in at least the UI functionality :\

I expect the game will have full support for OR (including system maps and all) when the consumer version of the Rift is released.

For the galaxy and system maps, I wish there was an option to display them inside the cockpit, just like the station menu is presently displayed, this would probably be more immersive and definitely more usable. The maps would appear on a flat virtual display before your eyes, remove the cursor depth issues.

How can you expect optimization when the Oculus Rift isn't complete?

Would that mean that once customer version is out, DK2 is gonna be utterly useless?

Uhhh, Yes. It is a DEV KIT after all. The consumer version should have much higher graphic potential, additional features (Crystal Cove or whatever already has integrated head phones) 360 degree rotational tracking, etc. It is still in developement.

Seriously, people who purchase into Development and Beta's have got to learn they are not released products. For one reason or another, they have wanted to assist in the creation and support of something great and usable. I am not complaining that my DK1 has practically no value to anyone besides me. And of course, the people I loan it out to for the experience.

No one has twisted anyone's arm to go out and spend money on projects that aren't even products yet.

Dude, dont patronize me.

I wouldn't be asking if there would be no effort from Elite Devs towards OR begin able to work with the game better all the time. But since there is and I havent been in beta at all, I'm wondering about how often do they improve it. That's all.
And DK2 after CV being useless, well, silly question indeed.

I'd be surprised if the dk2 stopped working when CV1 is on sale. It should continue to work. It's just that CV1 will be better.

I've got the game, but I'm not entirely enthusiastic about it tbh. The way the camera is positioned needs to be modified so that the sense of scale is correct while seated. The oculus desk room is a perfect example of this.

The game is pretty sweet while standing though.

I would also think that we might see some improvement as Frontier performs any last minute optimization for release. I would like to see at least them put some effort into getting direct mode working correctly. I would think Oculus would reach out to them and offer assistance as this will be the first retail game to offer support for VR.

What's direct mode? Is that where the game selects the screen automatically rather than my having to set up a second monitor? Are there any performance implications?

Optimised graphics drivers should also make a difference and Nvidia's VR direct features might help too. There's very little info on that though and they havent confirmed if all or any of the features will work with cards older than the 900 series

If I were running the OR development team I'd definitely be pushing to get into bed with FD on making both products better in a massive way. I think ED offers the OR people the first game where it actually is almost tailored made for the VR experience and so could be a massive selling point for the OR.

Sort of. As I understand it (and I could be wrong), direct mode is where the drivers draw the screen directly in the OR instead of to a generic second monitor (which so happens to be the OR). In theory this direct drawing would offer some performance and perhaps feature gains by being more focused (no pun intended) and essentially cutting out the relatively vague middle man to so speak.

Unfortunately I just cannot get direct mode to work with ED or indeed anything else that I've tried so far outside of the latest demo widgets but certainly nothing useful. I'm sure this will get better though.
