Optimized the loading of large maps

Hello, I have a few questions about the optimization of the game. Like many, my zoo has become large, my map is having more and more difficulty launching: several crashes after loading for 9-10 minutes, then sometimes, I would say, once out of 6 attempts, it eventually kicks in. In order to put my chances aside that this backup will still be used for a few long months, I would like to know if there was a listing of the settings or game options that make loading the maps complicated.

I first listed what I have already done :
  • Close the zoo to the public (0 visitors)
  • Put all animals in the exchange center
  • Delete all management options (litter on the ground, vandalism, energy, protesters, reproduction, escape, water management etc etc)
  • Generally reduce graphics performance on medium (with exception on textures)
  • Tidy up my workshop blueprints

I then have questions, to know if the elements listed below, could have an impact on the opening of the map (crash but also loading time).
I would be very grateful if you have answers or personal feedback on this subject:

1) Does too many custom media in UserMedia make loading longer? Is there a preferred format for images? (I'm importing JPEGs) Do videos (Webm) tend to require more loading resources?
2) Do mods have any impact on loading time?
3) I usually do one save per game day, it saved me many times from corrupted saves. But does too many saves have an impact on loading?
4) Is it possible to start the game in pause and not in play? So that the loading does not require generating the displacements?
5) Are there any particular settings, such as presets (I saw that it existed in the menus) that would favor loading performance?
6) Does having a lot of blueprints from the workshop make the loading time longer?
7) Is there a way to delete all the animals waiting in the exchange center (sorry, I played in French, so I don't know what name this exchange center takes in English). Do the animals present in the exchange center affect the loading time?
8) Does the staff have a more or equivalent impact to the visitors in the loading?
9) Do you have any other tips to help reduce the loading time of large maps and avoid crashes?
10) Do one or more of the above numbers have a much more significant impact than the others on launch optimization and if so can you name them?

I specify that I am an exclusively creative player, I do not manage, I play in the sandbox. I can do without the presence of visitors and animals during the constructions, I import them into their enclosures and into the paths of the zoo only to take photos and videos of them.

Thank you very much for your sharing of experiences and your conclusions, I believe that it will help me but also the whole community as many of us are frustrated to see our oldest and hardest creations become more and more complicated to play.

i guess i can help with some of these. I frequetly play on large maps and yes some maps do have issues while others dont. Like you i am also a purely creative player in sandbox.

1 - The larger the file, the more performance is required to generate the file into the game. This is obvious with large png files and video formats. Limit large video formats or compress them if possible, you can also compress images to reduce the overall size. I typically have around 50-120 custom media in the main folder at one time and performance does not seem to be overly affected solely based on this.
If you have several zoos using different custom media, i have zoo folders inside the usermedia folder and unpack and pack files in the usermedia folder based on which zoo i want - only the main usermedia files are read into the game.

2 - Yes mods do impact loading times when you have lots, personally i dont have more than 30-40 mods in a complete zoo at any time. Info from Leaf mentioned that large amounts of mods will make load times lomger

3 - I dont believe so. Having lots of saves is rather redunant unless you really experience crashing that often but the autosave saves in roughly the same interval which serves as a backup. I have my main save and my backup save incase i screw up something and the main file becomes broken in some way. When i add mods into a finished zoo (i dont actually play with mods like normal gameplay) , i create a new save for every single animal added which can easily be 20 plus saves made in a single real day. No performance or loading issues were found creating this amount of saves

4 - Not that im aware of, no setting or ability ingame allows you to load into pause

5 - Settings in the menus? Hmm disabling animal needs, staff and guest needs will prevent thousands of calculations needing to be generated upon loading. Having no animals, guests and staff will naturally improve performance but that kinda ruins the experience

6 - Yes i have found having lots of blueprints really does slow down the game. Avoid mindlessly subscribing to every blueprint on the workshop, i advise to go through your blueprint menu and get rid of any one time use blueprints you dont need anymore or unsubscribe from the blueprint once the item is placed ingame.

7 - Trade center would be the name, pretty much the same meaning. Yes i made the mistake of buying hundreds of animals in a zoo and that just ruined performance. If the animal cannot be sold, place them in quarantine because they are sick . Once healed then you can add them back to the center and sell them

8 - As mentioned , yes staff still need the same calculations as guests. The less staff you have the better performance

9 - As much as i hate to say it, my advice is to upgrade your computer when possible. The main issue with crashing is your RAM (computer memory) being too low to handle large zoos. A computer with 16gb of ram should be considered the minimum required to easily load large zoos, really large zoos require more. The way you mention it takes to load multiple times until it works , you are basically forcing the computer to allocate enough memory to the game. Also disable any other programs you may have on your computer such as discord or other heavy resource programs
Changing your computer to performance mode in the battery life settings, or changing planet zoo to high priority in the task manager (right click windows icon - task manager - more details - details - right click planet zoo and set priority to high) can possibly help

10 - the biggest impact on crashing - thats going to be number 9. Computer hardware is the first priority for constant crashes whether that is good news or not. After #9 it would be #7 and #2

I hope any of this helped, must be awful with the constant crashes
