Option for "2D Galaxy Map"?

Hi chaps, new VR player here.

I have spent a few hours fiddling around with the Galaxy map, and I have got all my control bindings sorted so that I can finally navigate around at an OK pace. That said, I would still love to see an option for a 2D galaxy map (like it appears in desktop mode), that could be navigated with a mouse as per usual. This could, for example, look like the station menu screen, or even game menu screen, and just float in front of the player with a virtual mouse for navigation.

I reckon this should be implemented for two reasons:
1. Immersion. What happens, in game, when I go into the galaxy map? Is it projected into my mind like a dream? This makes very little sense.
2. Speed / ease of use. Navigating with a mouse is considerably more efficient than flying around trying to select a starsystem or planet.

Given that all the controls and setup for a 2D galaxy map already exist from the desktop version, this just needs to be projected onto a plane in front of the player while sitting in the cockpit. Give us the option to choose between this and the current 3D "all around you" map in the options menu.

No reason not to have it as an option. I am so used to not using the mouse now, that when I do play without VR I still use my hotas. I find it very fast, and I actually like being in the galaxy map.

I struggled a lot with the map when I first switched to VR but once I figured out how to use it with the HOTAS I find it just as easy to uses as a mouse in non-VR.

i do navigate with the mouse very comfortably. try this:
- wsad for horizontal displacement
- mouse for aim, just like in a fps
- right mb + mouse forward/backwards for vertical displacement
- mouse wheel for zoom. zoom out for fast displacement, zoom in for slower and precise

it's pretty intuitive and really a breeze to use. now there is one big catch: mouse 'point and selection': once you have a system selected it is impossible to left click with the mouse in the pop up panel, as also happens with the side info panels. this has been completely broken like forever, and got actually worse on some update. so to navigate and activate panels and options i switch to the hotas and use the same controls bound for general ui. it has been broken for so long that i got used to it and don't even notice anymore.

you argument for immersion is legit, you are right. but the 3d map is actually very cool once you get used to it. if anything, i would miss accessing the system map info directly from the panels in the cockpit. the system map is really a chore to use, and presents the information in a very inefficient way. thus it's actually an instance of 'bad user interface design', however pleasantly looking, and there's no other solution apart from a redesign.

I'll start with number 2.
I still use the mouse with the GM as it is, as you point out , fast and easy. The only thing I changed was the forward back and side to side movement of the camera. This I bound to a pov hat on my throttle. I left the up/down camera movement as the default RMB. Make sure the "grid is turned on" so you can see the map's tracking circle. All the rest works just like 2d.

As for number 1.
I can think of other immersion breakers I would like to see dealt with first. Like proper body movement in general. I can just pretend that my space helmet has VR capability and that is why I see the map as if I am in inside the map room, when I call it up (Voice Attack), BUT I can't stand seeing my fracking hands move randomly all the time. Talk about breaking immersion.

Great Idea :) Never got the hang of the galaxy and sysem maps. If I know the system name I want I enter it in the box but for anything else or system map I switch back to 2d. Or scan everything till I find the Ammonia or whatever looked interesting. the only bit Of vr elite I am mystefied by Oh there is the new camera I guess but I usually just dont use it lol
