Option to disable automatic opening of side panels when looking at them

In the Control Settings under the Mode Switches section there are four options, Looking at Target Panel, Looking at Comms Panel, Looking at Role Panel, Looking at Systems Panel. They can each be set to Does Nothing.

Ohhhh yes! I remember now! I think I've at least turned off the "Role" panel as it popping up was annoying!

Thanks for the info/reminder :)

I'm confused - have they added the ability to toggle this setting via a HOTAS/keyboard control?

This really needs to be bound to a key, not an Options screen change. Being able to activate the side-screens via a twist of the head is great, but there are times when you need to scan the ground and those screens just get in the way. I have become creepy explorer guy.. keeping my head facing forwards (so the screens don't activate) but scanning the sides and underneath out of the corners of my eyes...

There is a hack of sorts, focus on chat and the headlook doesn't activate any of the other screens.

If I recall they are disabled from head look and instead you need to press the appropriate get to go the the panel to see it...

Yes, an option to instead assign them to a key depression to enable any/all assigned to it would be a nice addition...

yes. I agree.

using 1-4 to enable the panel without switching view over to them would work well for me. :D

Due to a (bug | feature) in 2.1, I now have a nice workaround for this. For me at least, the role panel (the "knee TV") can't be activated with head-look any more, so instead I bound it to a manual button. As it turns out, when the Role panel is opened in this way, the side-screens don't activate any more when you look at them.

So if I want to look from side to side without those screens, I just tap the button to show the Role panel; and to re-activate the focus-on-look, tap it again to hide the Role panel.

I have all the panels on buttons...and I believe there is a do not open panels on the mode switch options:

Turning them off seems to work fine for me?

New player. Using Oculus.

I like the automatic opening, but how far you have to look seems to vary ship to ship. I didn't have a problem in the starter ship at all and never had any unwanted panel openings, but after buying an eagle, they are in the way all the time stealing focus and it's a real nuisance... So for me I think the best solution is maybe being able to tweak how far you have to look to deliberately open the panel... I want to really have to look over my shoulder almost... Far enough that it doesn't trigger in dogfights.

I would also like there to be a keybind "toggle" for this as it is distracting in VR.
When driving the SRV and you need to look around much more and the trigger focus is much reduced it pops up all the time. As the interface in the SRV is closer to your face it is horribly jarring with force a eye focus shift whic only increases the motion sickness for me :(

FDev pleaseeeee help us :)

Cheers.

This exists. All of it is already implemented. Check out the options menu, under controls. I don't remember exactly where, but there are all sorts of variations. I have my menus toggled to the number keys, 1, 3, 4, and 5, they will not come up if I don't toggle them, and they'll stay up 'til I turn them off (which can cause it's own set of problems in VR).

The problems in VR is the reason we need the option to toggle "look to open" on and off. I want to be able to look around my ship without panels popping up, then when I press the button looking will open a panel when I look at it AND CLOSE the panel I look away.

If i use the key to open the inventory tab, when I look away and press the fire button I will often unintentionally dump the currently selected resource I'm refining because the panel is not hidden automatically and the focus stays in the panel.

As noted, the functionality is already there. Simply turn off the open on look option and open/close the panels with the dedicated key binds.

Agreed, soon if it goes as it was on the live stream, as well as hitting that poxy open engineers tab, I'll be hitting open halo me option which I'll use once..

I diddnt know this was an option..ty.

Option already exists... Menu controls... Looking at panel = does nothing. Set that and then bind a key to turn panel on/off. So panel will not appear if you look towards it and you can turn it on or off as desired with the bound key. Now. one more point, a panel can now be turned on even if not looking towards it which means, if you know what keys you need to press for a particular action, you can do the action without even looking at the panel. Great when you are in a fight for example.

Editx; Found controls in options to resolve this.

Exact Location;

Controls> MODE SWITCHES> "Looking at Target Panel" and "Looking at Systems Panel" - Set Both to "Does Nothing". Make sure you have key binds for opening these panels.

You can also set these panels to open while head looking in that direction but not lock the controls to just those panels - useful for using VR.

Dear God YES! For the love all all that is immersive there is nothing worse then flying around or Driving around trying to head look to spot and these side panels keep opening forcing my controls to those panels instead of my flight controls. This simple feature to just remove the side panels from being triggered from head look would be amazing its not like you can really see the side panels anyway when your head looking as its zoomed out compared to physically selecting the number 1 or 4 (default keys) to zoom into those panels.

Thank you for this request, I sincerely hope that they take a good hard look at this and change it.

You can already disable them so that they do not pop up when you look at them.

Very much underrated post, thanks!

Also, agree with this:

I suppose that knowing how to disable the side panels from appearing when you look at them is something that's not very obvious in the game (as the option is buried under several layers of more obscure keybinding options), so bringing this thread to the top is not horrendously bad. However, the Suggestions sub-forum might not be the best place for this kind of information and discussion, at least in terms of general visibility for those who might benefit from the info.
