Option to Keybind Self-Destruct

I'm experimenting with Voice Attack, and I have created my own self-destruct sequence through voice activation. However It's tedious to have the computer press 4, e 4 times, then s 13 times, spacebar, then s, then spacebar again. It would be much easier to have a single keybind to press rather than going through the menu. I know it's not top priority, but it would make voice activated self destruct sequences much smoother. Thank you to the Elite: Dangerous team for making such a great game!

It would maybe be a bit dumb if you fly an anaconda then accidently push the key binded to self destruction on your keyboard :p

Yeah, I am wondering why someone would want to have it at the press of a button. That is, other than to exploit it to deny another player a certain kill; i.e. you are at few % hull and don't you'll turn the table around - self-destruct before they score a kill. Similar exploits have existed (and been heavily used) in other games. :(

I don't know, however, whether such an exploit even exists. Could someone (possibly FD themselves) clarify what happens when you are attacking a wanted pirate, for example, and they self-destruct before you land the final hit? Does the pilot who scored the last hit before self-destruction get the kill? Or does no one?

It could be even more fun than that. Captain Berk squashes your little Sidewinder with his massive Anaconda. He asks if you have any last words before he finishes you off.

Through the comms he hears "James Isaiah Berk... Captain... Destruct sequence 1, code 1-1 A."...

He scrambles to find the abort button. In his panic he's forgotten the abort command, and that he could simply switch the comms off.

Or is self destruct a legitimate warrior tactic?
In dying well .. grant me "revenge," that I might take you with me to Valhalla!

In terms of playing, I'd like to see possibility to bind a key (though it's probably more something for a hotas switch / button set up) .. Being something like "don't hit boost inside a station," self destruct is that scary hair-trigger, you dare not go near .. It therefore sounds like a pain for FDEV to code but (imo) would add something to play.

On a related note, with voice attack, I think coding "commputer self destruct, set [ five ] minute silent countdown, authorisation Picard alpha tango " sounds fun to me! (there's always another Enterprise where that one came from)

.. But if you could set a delayed countdown, could you sacrifice your ship in an act of sabotage that takes out the Emperor's Emissary?

That is a good point, it could unfortunately be exploited to deny a player a kill. As for accidentally pressing it, like others have stated, I would assume Frontier would make the key initially not keybound, so it is the player's decision.

I've seen at least one other request for this, and it does look like a cheap way to deny an opponent a bounty.

It should instead have a 30 sec timer and disable your controls.

This.

And the possibility to cancel the self-destruct order during the countdown by pressing the same key.
