OR Cresent Bay and ED

I know the latest OR build - Cresent Bay probably isn't going to be available to us, but I'm dying to hear what ED feels like in a Cresent Bay setup.

Anyone heard or read about if someone has experienced that yet?

I wondered that too. Very few people have used the crescent bay and Oculus haven't said anything about how it differs from the DK2. Most I've heard is that the resolution is better and that it has built in headphones.

As far as I can tell, it's running 1440p at 90hz. Whether that's downsampled is anyone's guess, but as the DK2 uses a panel from a Samsung Note 3 (1080p) then it's logical to assume that the Crescent Bay prototype uses the 1440p panel from a Samsung Note 4.

They have treated the lenses or panel with a coating to reduce the screen door effect somwhat. Whether this introduces any perceivable blur to the image is yet to be seen, but I suspect it's not noticeable by most of the users.

I kinda wished they would offer the CB up for preview - it's clear that releasing this year might be problematic due to the current tech limitations. You need a beast of a rig to run the DK2 @ 1440p/75ps, optimisations are definitely needed if they want us to run at 1440p/90fps.

as for 4k/90fps - forget it!

Oh and I remember reading somewhere that the eye pieces have been redesigned to be oval shaped as opposed to perfectly circular.

The thing to remember though is that the Rift will never get to monitor resolution. Your eyes are so close to the screen that even 4K would not be enough. In fact Oculus themselves calculated that to get the same perceived pixel density as a monitor then they would have to bump up the resolution to 16K per eye! Clearly that is not currently possible technically but certainly not whilst keeping the Rift in the $300-$500 price range that Oculus are aiming for.

Can you imagine the rig (or at least the GPU power required) to drive 16K per eye at 90Hz or above!!

Most rumors/guesses are for a 2016 release for CV1. That would mean 1-2 new generations of graphics cards, so hopefully the tech will be available at a reasonable price by then.

I wish they'd use some kind of eye tracking to work out which part of the image you're actually looking at - only THAT part needs to be rendered at full quality. The GPU can cut corners elsewhere and the Mk1 human visual perception system will fill in the details.

No one knows (or should I say those that do are keeping quiet) what screen the CB is using, but it ISNT from a NOTE4 as they could not get the refresh rate up.

initially most people were assuming CV1 would be 1440P, and indeed palmer said himself it would be a higher res than DK2..... However recently oculus do seem to be distancing themselves from that saying that if they increase res then it will make the SDE worse. Many people have said whilst the SDE is reduced in CB, they are also saying the resolution is still pretty low. Now, CB ISNT necessarily using the same screen as CV1..... but I am less confident that CV1 will be 1440P than I was.

As for release date, other than random guessing the last actual quote I heard about CV1 was from Palmer who said something along the lines of he would be very dissapointed if it was not out before the end of 2015

Indeed. I'd rather they brought out two versions. The CV1 general edition with the compromises it takes to keep the price point to what they want and perhaps a pro version where there are much less compromises made (much higher pixel density for instance) for a much larger price of course.

That would be clever but it might make the headset heavy to use for long periods. I know Oculus are looking at making it lighter or at least better balanced as people often say the DK2 is a little front heavy heavy.

Heavy? Time for some people to hit the gym :D

It is not the resolution that is problem, but rather the pixel density. The current pixel density is 441 but for an Oculus Rift to match the PPDoV (Pixels per degree of vision) of a FHD (1080p) 24" monitor at 26" viewing distance would require a resolution of 4033x5041 per eye for a total resolution of a 8066x5041 screen.A 5" 8066x5041 screen would have a total PPI of 1902. A slightly larger 7" screen would only need a PPI of 1359.

Not unobtainable numbers but the panels would be very expensive and probably outside of current manufacturing capabilities. I know of no panel manufacturer who can make a 7" screen (or 5" for that matter) to those numbers.

Lol, indeed although for me it is less about neck strain but more about cheek strain because for my eyes to be dead centre of the eye pieces my DK2 needs to sit on my cheek bones essentially.

Tighten the velcro strap on the very top, then, most of the weight should be taken by your scalp! I get sore around my eyes because I have the side straps a bit tight while gaming (but necessary to avoid having to readjust for the sweet spot so often..)

For me its the top of my ears that get irritated by the strap. If I was more energetic I'd make some sort of fuzzy covering.
