Orbit lines in supercruise

Is there any way of taking them off? I don't need them and I feel like they break the suspension of belief. Also...
I heard from the newsletter there are going to be 4k graphics. What is that? Do I need a new monitor or a special card or some such thing or will they work out of the box on a normal PC maybe dropping the FPS from 80-90 (what I'm getting now) to 40fps or something

Elite: Dangerous will work perfectly well on regular pc's and monitors. Framerates and resolutions will of course depend on hardware.

I wasn't sure about the orbit lines at first either, but I would encourage the OP to consider for a moment, that at some point in the future their purpose will become more apparent ;)

It is easy to forget that every feature we have right now, could just be a place holder for something better. Remember the skybox background we had in Alpha?

Great :) But how about a slight change to orbit lines to make it clearer which part of the orbit is in front of the planet, and which part behind ? can be confusing in SC going towards it(and planet) then realising you have to take evading action :D

This has been asked for many times.

Orbit lines are basic right now, but I'm betting they will become more informative soon. Like it'll show the direction of orbit, they'll hide behind bodies so that you know if it goes behind or in front of something, the blue lines showing the gravity wells are already very useful...

To run in 4K you'll of course need a 4K screen, but you'll also need a stonkingly good GPU.

As already mentioned there is no way to turn the lines off but you could make a suggestion of a poll to see what others think on the subject to see if there is enough support to make this an in game option. I myself find the lines useful.

If you were to attempt to run 4K at an acceptable framerate then you would need a very good system and a 4K monitor.

4K monitors are still currently quite pricey unless you opt for a TN panel rather than IPS and even then it will probably set you back around £375 GBP at a minimum.

You would also need a modern processor and a top end graphics card (or even two of them in crossfire or SLI if you want to run at higher graphics settings) as 4k has a lot of pixels.

Top end graphics cards currently are the Nvidia GTX 780Ti or the overpriced GTX Titan and Titan Z or the AMD R9 290x or R9 295 X2.

A standard 1080p monitor has 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels.

A 4K monitor has 3840x2160 = 8,294,400 pixels.

As you can see that is a lot of pixels, and that is why crazy hardware is required.

Orbit line are pretty cool I think. It's nice if they intend to make them more informative and hide behind planetary bodies. You move at astronomical speeds, so it's great to have an indication of movements at astronomical scales ;)

If it helps , I run 6 million pixels(75% of a 4k res at 8M pixels) with 2 X GTX780Ti and I have some room to spare, I reckon I can run 4K with my setup.

I am currently running 6400x1440 which comes in at a hefty 9,216,000 pixels. I think I need a third R9 290X to be able to run at maximum settings. I will probably update to Haswell-E once the DDR4 prices stabilise to eliminate any CPU bottleneck.

All of the graphics settings are not yet currently available in the graphics options, so what is considered maximum settings now will be higher and more demanding upon release.

Omg I almost threw my joystick on the floor the first time this happened to me. Not out of anger, but because I yanked it so hard to steer out of the way. Then I went to the bathroom to clean the mess in my pants.

First I want to say: awesome game, been trying and flying for some weeks now. Loving it.

On the matter of orbit lines:
Having a button to toggle those orbit lines on/off would be great. It would be nice to toggle the lines off for a bit to enjoy the view of approaching those beautifull systems, just for astetic reasons; it makes it more immersive imo. It's not that I would like to fly with orbit lines off all the time, just for a little bit to enjoy the view.

Same goes for the target hud indicators. I know I can disable the hud with ctrl+alt+G, but that disables all hud indicators in my ship, like temps and speed etc. I would just like an option to toggle the target indicators, the circles that show up over planets, stars etc. Or at least be able to change their opacity and their color from orange to another color.

I know a lot of it is just placeholders right now, and things will change. Frontier did a great job making this game, imo.
