Orbital Cruise -- combat?

So as I understand it orbital cruise, which we have not yet seen, right? is a new layer in the transition from space to planetary surface, I would guess from supercruise close to a planet but it might include normal flight too.

Anyway, is orbital cruise merely a transition layer to travel at higher speeds to planetary objectives or is it going to allow for game play as well, pursuit would seem obvious and simple enough, but what about combat? I would guess not if it is higher speed, for all the reasons we hate but accept.

Orbital cruise is just new HUD elements popping up as you cross the exclusion zone that would normally pull you out of SC without a planetary approach suite.

You then drop into normal space when you are close enough to the surface, much like entering a planetary ring.

edit: so it's likely going to act just like normal SC - except if you drop to normal space you will already/still have the new HUD elements (and likely same flight mechanics as close to the ground)

Orbital cruise is just like supercruise so presumably no combat unless interdicted.

Just wondering about planetary flight combat and the likes though (and presumably orbital cruise interdictions)

If we drop cargo, surely that cargo will start to fall? It's going to make scooping a whole lot more tricky!!

Yeah I believe orbital cruise is just different name for SC, thus all existing rules will apply for OC as well. No combat to be had in there :)

Might have to land and pick it up in your bug... er.. SRV.

...assuming it survives the fall, of course.

I hadn't thought of it quite like that, but that makes sense, OC is just SC but allowing you down to a lower altitude if you have the PAS, its nothing new at all really, then there is a transition into planetary flight mode.

If it does allow for some form of interdiction (surely it must?) then perhaps it has options to pull up into a space instance or down into a planetary one. i gues it provides options regardless, you can fight it out in normal flight, either in space or planetary and if you're in planetary flight I suppose you could attempt to land, though I doubt you would have much chance surviving an attacker in flight.

Or you could, depending on the situation, try to get lost in a canyon!

Which will be cool, but I don't see anything that suggests there will be a way to find them, other than chance. It's one of those things where a 'real' planet will most likely be the most boring combat environment immaginable and a mission that coudl 'home' in to interesting terrain features would actually be a good idea :)

If you're close enough to the ground, interdiction would be potentially fatal, for either party!

good point, maybe instead of the current interdiction there is some new mechanism to force you down to planetary flight where combat can be engaged

I like that it's risky. 'Specially for the interdictor. The interdictee can always submit, to avoid risk.

All depends as well on what altitude you drop out at in the normal course of events.

Logically OC should allow interdiction - otherwise players would effectively be able to avoid others by remaining in OC.

I wonder what the minimum height limit is for OC - losing control of the ship after failing to avoid interdiction at low altitude could mean loss of the ship on contact with the moon / planet / etc....
