Orbiting planet

Hi,
what would happen if you put yourself in the orbit of a planet (out of supercruise)? Will it hit you at some time?
Will it stop? Then it has to stop at everyone's client to stay synced.
But that would mean you could influence the planets position and even stop it.
Greetings from the trolls :O

I think someone tried this with a moon a while ago. IIRC once they got within a certain distance they were "picked up" by the orbiting body in much the same way as a fast orbiting station picks you up when you get within 1000 km in super cruise.

Yepp, I once did it with one of the moons of, I think it was Hathor. The moon comes towards you until you automatically join its frame of reference and move together in its orbit. The thing is, however, said thing happened to me only when I was already inside the moon - i.e. the "join frame of reference" distance was smaller than the moon's radius, plus it seemed to lack a proper hitbox.

I was not even mass-locked at that point, I could engage FSD without problem from right inside the moon, and fly out again. :D

Oh you are right, as soon as it stops, my frame of reference changed. It was also a Hathor moon but dou you remember yours, so I can try it out?
Would love to see me get squashed by it :D

BTW Isn't it a bug that you don't orbit Hathor when you are not near a moon of it?

I looked my old ticket up (still "under investigation" btw), it was Coltan:

I put myself precisely on the orbit of Coltan around Hathor, about 8000 km away from Coltan, in the direction it is moving. I disengaged supercruise there and waited for it to come closer. I did not collide with the moon, instead it passed right through me until, 65km from its center of gravity, my ship joined the movement of the moon in its orbit (I can see from stars appearing resp. disappearing behind Hathor that I am moving in Coltan's orbit now). I can move around inside Coltan now, all movement is relative to its center of gravity, and I am not mass-locked in any way and can charge up FSD with no penalty.

There are screenshots, too, of the moon approaching and then me being inside, but I can't link them due to them being attached to the ticket.

One of the devs mentioned that it's currently by design that your ship does not enter an orbit. I'd prefer an actual orbit if you drop out of SC in the sphere of influence of a planet or moon, too.
