Orbits and Backdrops....

Does anyone know if....

1) The system bodies orbit the star / stations orbit their respective planets? I've been doing a particular trade run for a while, and it seems like the station varies it's distance from the planet it's orbiting.....sometimes its right next to it, other times it's quite far out.

2) Is the space skybox a simple, fixed, layered graphic, or is it generated? What I mean is, if I go to Sol could I pick out real/fake constellations which wouldn't be there if I were at Groombridge, for example. Has their galaxy generation procedure created a unique view of the stars depending on what point of said galaxy you are in at that time. I imagine it is layered so that nebulas can change size as you get closer to them as they figure quite prominently on the galaxy view.

Just askin' out of interest, that's all.

Orbital paths are elliptical, not circular. The eccentricity of the ellipse may not be very pronounced for close objects like stations, but they will still have some variation in distance from the primary body.

As Whiterose said, the backdrop is generated according to your position inside the galaxy. I.e. not only nebulae will change with position but also the "galaxy band" you see changes!

If you go to Sol you can see that it's the same night sky we see ourselves. As you travel away from Sol to other systems the constellations rapidly become unrecognizable as your perspective on the stars changes.
