Orca needs some love. And a buff.

Orca is a lovely ship for sure, but sadly, it seems to have been designed for some different game. Even if we had the possibility to carry people around, the only purpose of this ship would be probably doing some missions that involve carrying passengers. Which means this ship will remain one that's used by almost no player. Its layout and internal compartment would place it somewhere Type 6 and Type 7 if somebody wanted a slightly better trading ship, but that would require its price to be dropped to something between 20-30mil. At its current price there aren't many reasons to choose it over Python, which is much, more capable in all possible tasks (including exploration).
Only Frontier knows how important carrying passengers is going to be in the future. So perhaps it would be best to leave it as it is and introduce Orca Mk2 instead (or Orca Explorer). The idea is to make it an exploration vessel, not so much a passenger one. This would require replacing class 4 Fuel Tank with Class 5 one and Class 5 FSD with Class 6 one. And / or shave off its weight to something like 300T.
The trade off would be removing most of the passenger space (turning it more into an observation deck, similar to one on Anaconda) and replacing most of its windows with metal hull.

The internal compartments of this ship are pretty ok for an exploration vessel, armamaments and armour are sufficient for an exploration vessel, the canopy is good, but the jump range is really rubbish (D-rated Orca with A rated FSD can do 17-18 Ly only, which is not good enough, it would need to be between 25 and 30 Ly). I feel there is a need for some ship that would sit somewhere between Asp Explorer (which doesn't have enough compartments) and Anaconda (which is an overkill and a bit too expensive to be an upgrade from Asp E, plus, a bit unwieldy when it comes to landing on planets). Saud Kruger is probably not the best manufacturer for that kind of ship, but they can always have shares in some other company, manufacturing the exploration version of Orca. Perhaps under a different name, perhaps with the cockpit being more utilitarian, perhaps with hull being standard issue grey instead of white, perhaps with adding another internal compartment class 4 or smaller.

So my suggestion would be to drop the price of current Orca to something below 30 million, to make it an alternative to Lakon Type 7, slightly more capable in combat situations. And introduce a new ship based on its frame, designed with exploration in mind and costing something between 40 and 50 mil.

You know that the Orca has a niche, but strangely popular role in PVP right? Pirate Orca's are quite popular and they can be turned into horrible ramming monsters full of hull reinforcements.. So you do see them about in open. I was thinking about buying one actually, I haven't given Orca PVP a go yet.

That's a creative use for the ship and it's fine if it can be used in its current form for something, but as you have noticed, it's a niche market, not quite in line with what Saud Kruger created the ship for and not quite in line with several activities available in game. You can still use it in this role if you wish so, no problem with that.

In case of regular combat, FDL and Python cost not that much more and are way more suitable for that. In terms of trade, it's way too expensive to be an alternative to Type 7 and not good enough to beat Python in this role. In terms of exploration... Well, it's just not there. That's why I think it should be a bit cheaper in it's current shape. And since apart from its jump range it might be absolutely perfect for exploration, it might be useful to create some sort of replacement for this price range. Since the introduction of planetary landing there is a need for some ship with good jump range and more internal compartments than Asp E has and currently the only ship that fits the specification is Anaconda. Which, as nice a ship as it is, has several flaws as an upgrade from Asp (visibility, handling, manouverability, price). There are cheaper alternatives to Asp Explorer, but there's nothing slightly more expensive and better.

I didn't think it could possibly get worse. It has.
it seems to have been designed for some different game
No kidding? You acknowledge this and then proceed to ignore it. Exactly all of your supporting arguments for an orca buff are invalidated by the fact that it's a ship (not unlike the FDS) that was designed for content that doesn't exist yet. And it's not like you don't know this. You said so yourself. You just choose to ignore it. You give exactly no good reasons why the orca needs some love or a buff. The 'there aren't many reasons to choose it over the Python" line especially cracked me up. So, to address the topic of the thread, no, the orca does not need a buff. Why? Because it's impossible to measure how bad it is without reference. It is not flawed, it does not need to be made cheaper, it doesn't need more range, etc. To say so is as absurd as me saying that unknown artifacts need a buff. Nobody has a clue how to use it, but it's less lucrative than selling other stuff therefore obviously it needs a buff right? Sweet jesus.

Now regarding the orca mkII thought, I believe I've we're getting things like the dolphin and the beluga that will pretty much be exactly like a cruise ship, fulfilling the gap you seem to want to fill. I do agree that galaxy tours should be a thing one way or another just because of how conceptually cool it is.

I considered a thousand times to buy an Orca, but decided against: A not-even-half-the-price-Clipper does outmatch this ship in every aspect. As I'm a great fan of the saying "form follows function", I have to agree with OP: this ship is as beautiful as useless atm, what is a great pity!
