Newcomer / Intro Original backer trying to get back into the game, feeling a bit overwhelmed

Not sure why are you resetting your ranks - to make game...dumber?
Why didn't you sell your Clipper and settle on what you know (Asp?) and can use at least semi-efficiently?
You can always finance other purpose ships (exploration, combat) with relatively low spendings.

If you are genuinely unable to keep an A rated clipper (I have one, non-engineered btw) flying then frankly you will always have issues. You know, I never lost my Clipper - even D rated. Its just too fast.

Then you were lucky until now. I lost my A-rated Clipper when I came into a new system and was immediately interdicted and lost the mini-game after two seconds while submitting, making me swirl all around the sun. After regaining control I ran and low-waked, low on shield, to be immediately interdicted again, this time submitting fast enough and while boosting, I was hit through the shield, burning my thrusters and in 5 seconds obliterating me. The guy from FD later stated that I had no shields to begin with, so maybe that was it, anyway, I really do not know how I could have prevented that.

Well, learned my lesson and am saving now to at least two times the insurance fee (10M) before trying to fly my Clipper again... of course hoping i will never wreck it again, like you

I let my rank be reset because every interdiction at that time was instant-death for me and i did not know how to cope with that. Later I learned to flee properly from this forum. Also, I thought that if i started again, I would eventually learn to combat and when I flew my DBS everything went really well. But the goal still was/is that anaconda, so I needed to trade and mine for money and the ASP made me do that quite nicely, until the next step towards the anaconda... the Clipper

Yes, i did. I thought bigger was better and I also thought that upgrading is always good. Just like I saw 24 hours from sidewinder to anaconda and believed that too. That's me.

But tell me, how am I supposed to know which videos are correct and which are a lie? True, I got a lot of good advice, but also some poor advice. After earning 50M with my ASP, I thought I could afford this Clipper, but apparently that is not true. So, I learned that the hard way. I am good with that.

Thing is, in my first few ships, upgrading was good and made my ship grow faster, stronger, more cargo and all of that. That was all true up until my ASP. Then 2.1 hit and I am struggling like hell. Had my ranking reset and that brought me my 50M and therefore the Clipper. And i really hoped that would solve my flying and battle problem, but it hasn't. So now i am back at my original ranking and very slowly progressing towards being able to fly my Clipper two times to shreds. Still progress, but slowly.
As for the ASP: I could handle it very well up to 2.1 with that ranking and now the problem is back, so i will probably ask to be dereanked again and that will solve my problem for the next 50M and Type-9?

To answer the first part of the question - I think internet "tutorials" and "How to's" are useful only in part. I don't think it's wise to follow ANY tutorial to the letter. I think one should try to handle things on one's own and only if they run into the obstacle that is seemingly unbeatable, tutorials are great.
Other than that, I agree that things like "Sidey to Conda in 24 hours" did a great disservice to bot the gameplay and newcomer community. It made people think that earning money is easy and bigger ships are better, whereas in fact it is the pilot, who has to become better at earning money and killing stuff. Ships are just tools. (Sorry, ships. :x )

Which ties to the second part of your post. I believe that lowering your rank, again won't actually help you.
What would help you, though, is doing some engineering. I know I said it doesn't matter whether you have engineered ship or not, but maybe those 10-20% increase in stats the grade 1 mods are offering would make that small difference between life and death for you.
Farseer, McQuinn and Dweller are really easy - you can basically unlock themm by accident just by playing the game. Then, aside from Felicity's interest in Meta-Alloys you can easily gain access.
Grade one mods cost only 1 common material each (usually nickel and sulfur) - stuff you have hundreds units of, i you use SRV at least a little bit - and they make a big difference.

Can you give us some videos perhaps (enable Shadowplay on the 5 minute setting perhaps and then if you die hit AltF10)
If you are genuinely serious with the accuracy of what you are describing then I would love to see it.
Sorry if this seems harsh but I cannot fathom why you are in this mess (Not the flying Clipper without insurance one - that is your fault entirely)

I'm flying un-modded ships all around the bubble with engineer commodities- yes, I don't advise it - but I am doing it because it doesn't matter to me. I used the advice on this forum long ago and utilise that advice to this day. And I do not die. And very rarely am I interdicted anyway.
You have stated that you are non PP aligned, no bounties/ fines etc....so we have to take your word on that.

I actually look forward to an interdiction to break the monotony of missions.....maybe Chris and I should join you on a cargo run and find out what in the name of Zeus's butthole you are doing.......!

Not a bad idea, I'm back in the bubble for a bit and also flying my Clipper so if you want to wing up one us should be able to help you (Pipo that is) out.

If time allows, me and my trusted AspX would be glad to join that shindig.
You guys will be mostly safe - I had my second PvP encounter last night, and this time didn't accidentally kill him [big grin]

1. As others already said, NPCs got much stronger a while ago. Better be careful.
2. Based on that, my advice would be to store your Python for the moment. It's a good ship, but has a massive rebuy. Get a much smaller and cheaper ship instead and fly that one for a while. Once you feel proficient enough, the Python still is there for you. :)
5. See #1. Use a smaller ship till you feel saver and can afford a good setup. The Python is one of the ships where the setup makes a huge difference. Some cheaper ships perform rather well already with just small modifications, but the Python performs badly in stock setup and needs a lot of upgrades to turn into a good ship. On the positive, once it is set up, it's a really awesome ship, but it's an expencive way to go.
