Original Beta player, is it worth coming back now

I played ED in the original beta stage, i also bought Horizons beta package, so i already own all the latest updates ect, and i have over 800 hrs playtime , lots of ships incl Anaconda, python ect, and many millions in the bank.

Thats my history, so now my question.

I have not played for many months, my saitek x52 has been in storage, 2 major updates have passed, Guardians and 2.3 Multicrew.

I stopped playing as it was becoming monotonous doing the same things over and over, grinding for this, grinding for that, and i felt that there was little (if any) enjoyable gameplay, i did not get involved much in the BGS, i hated powerplay, and i was mainly a lone pilot, not playing much with any others.
In your opinion, do you think it is worth coming back now.
You can see the type of player i was, and why i stopped playing, i do not want to re install, and set up my joystick, just to get back in game and be bored again within a few hrs, yes i have watched youtube and streams, and some of it looks interesting, some not so much.

Do you feel the updates have added to the gameplay in any way to stop me getting tired of the game quickly, or should i wait until after another few updates before diving back in.

Doubt you'll like it.

Its a sandbox game, what people call a "grind" i call "gameplay" because it isnt mandatory. I dont HAVE to buy a cutter but if i want to, i can do the "grind" which is another way of saying "play the game with a goal in mind" rather than playing the game with no goal.

And the only reply so far is why you shouldn't really bother to come to the forums ATM to get any helpful advice. Sorry.

From my perspective, I am much like you in my play style and I have to say - jump in, even if it is just to learn the new UI and other bits (Engineers, passengers, etc.).

Only then can you make up your mind.

Fly safe CMDR.

Sniped, sorry I mean the first reply. Doh.

No, not really. It's still the same game, by-and-large. The Engineers has added some interesting mechanics, driving game-play that isn't just about collecting money.

But if you've seen it all, and done it all, there's not much point coming back till either earthlike-landings or space legs.

How is my reply not accurate? As the reply below mine says, what the OP calls grind, I call flying spaceships. I love it and he won't.

OP, I would try it. You have 800 hrs played for a reason and are obviously doubting ;)

I have the same playstyle and have / had a lot of fun with the ship launched fighters.
Also the engineers are a lot more accesible due to not needing engineer commodity's.
There are also lots of little quality of life improvements.

Just wait untill 2.3 is out of beta.

you could consider doing things very different this time ... maybe do a clear save ... or work along those lists of things: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/287248-How-many-of-these-have-you-tried and https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/288316-How-many-of-these-have-you-tried-Part-2

i generally switch occupations in ED often to keep things fresh .... playing for two weeks in quince ... outfitting an eagle and go bounty hunting ... taking part in canonns mystery solving ... travelling to some hypergiants .... testing the BGS ... flipping a system with a group .. returning to mining .... attacking bases etc. pp.

but i don't see any update in the last year which fundamentally changed the game.

if you do it the same way as the time you stopped, you'll only see the same things.

If you feel like you miss playing then you should probably give it a go and then make up your own mind.
If you don't, then probably pass. The game is not so different now.

It depends if you will like flying a fighter for someone else or manning a holo turret.

ED still has no story apart from CG and galnet.

Nothing significant has changed really. Like you, I haven't played since 2.0 and only hang around now on the slim hope it might change direction. Come back when 3.0.drops... if they bother with it.

I like to do short exploration trips, just tooling around in the galaxy, been in from the start, not even reached my first billion yet.

Power Play, tried it, didn't like it.
Wings, fun but not always possible and only when you system are at war.
The Engineers, it's ok if you can see beyond the fruit machine mechanics and UI.
SLF, great I love that one, loads of fun in it or just using it as a support role.

I can't wait for the day I can sneak into a base, accessing terminals and steal some equipment or intel documents, or together with friends capture a base in our system.

I'm a huge user of HCS Voice packs + other 3rd party tools, because as it is right now, there are still a lot missing, but it's slowly getting better.

Yes.

I'm very much waiting for FD to 'wow' me again - Its been a while.

The ability to explore our ship interiors would certainly bring me back. Imagine if FD gave us comparable design customisation flexibility for our ship interiors as they've given to Planet Coaster players with their scenery and building creation tools. That would be amazing. I could easily burn through another 1000 hours modding my ship interior spaces with that level of cusomisation to play with.

If you feel the urge to come back, then it's time to come back. While all games get boring after a while, some games have the power to draw you back months or years afterwards - Elite Dangerous may be one of these for you.

Just remember that it's still the same game, just with more stuff. Like others have said, you'll get more enjoyment out of it if you don't race towards certain arbitrary goals.

Maybe you'll play it for more than 800 hours this time, or maybe you'll end up shelving it for even longer. It just depends if Elite Dangerous is the type of game that you find enjoyable.

there is some new stuff which is impressive and i am glad i have been to see them (still not seen the ruins yet either)

i would say, one thing you should do, esp before 2.3 incase what happens changes go to one of the alien crash sites (google co-ords) and pick up a UA. (so you need a bit of cargo space and an SRV) then fly to maia . if you get there and nothing interesting happen when you are on your way then hyperspace jump around the area for a bit. Make sure you have in game music and all sound effects on.

Do it in a ship with good vision like an asp. i am sure you have seen the spoilers but if you havent i will leave it at that.

(oh and if you have access to it, do it in VR!)

the ship launched fighters are fun, the leveling up a harmless npc crew is enjoyable RPG grinding (I say that not as a negative) and flying SLFs are fun
the ambiance around bases as well as the new base interiors are nice.
there are some new location which are also pretty, with even more coming in 2.3.

gameplay wise at its core, its pretty much the same, but its all just a bit more polished with a bit more variety.

only you can decide if that is enough.....ultimately the game is the same, but then you would not expect it to radically alter would you?

That's super tough to answer.
There have been a lot of little improvements here and there that makes things nicer than they were.
If you haven't tried messing around in an SRV that can be fun and you can try out some of the new missions there.
The Engineers are in a better place now than they were, so if upgrading any of your ships sounds fun then that might work for you - then again if you haven't got any ideas for after that perhaps not worth it?
The various mysteries and some exploration might suit you. Perhaps try out the ancient ruins mission, that's what I'm doing at the moment and gives you a specific place to start.
In many ways it is still very much the same game as it was but with a few more bits and pieces going on and things polished up a bit, that might be enough for you or not.
I'd suggest try and if you aren't having fun perhaps come back next year, should be a fair few more things by then.
