Community Event / Creation Original Elite Running Next To The New Elite

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7I8MkwRuqZ0

With the help of family, and friends I was able to get my very old Apple IIE playing the original first Elite space simulator from 1985 set up next to my newish computer with the Elite Dangerous space simulator now in Beta testing up, and running together. They both have their joysticks, and on their monitors a space station awaiting my ships arrival.

David Braben, and his team have put together an incredible game/simulator sandbox. The first on in '85 was WAY ahead of its time being the very first 3D, and sandbox game to come out. This new Elite is allowing us to explore the entire Milky Way galaxy. Over 400 billion star systems to explore. You can allow this game to be played on up until your old age, and then passing it on to you young one to carry on the adventure exploring. ;)

With this video I just wanted to express my appreciation for their very hard work into these simulators that allow me to 'get out' and explore. Now more than ever do to being handicapped. :)

Have fun exploring commanders!!

Interesting to note that the rotational direction of stations with respect to the docking bay was changed after the original Elite. From FE2 onwards they have rotated counter-clockwise, whereas in the original 8-bit games they rotated clockwise.

Presumably there was a galaxy wide backlash over which way was the right way in the "Great Clockwise Revolution of 3226" and all the stations were stopped and then spun in the opposite direction...

Cheers,

Drew.

Should have used an annotation (or post-it sticky) on each version so it was easier to keep track of which was which.

I look forward to your next video in 30 years time of elite: extremely dangerous on the holodeck with your old PC and old apple.
