Other players mysteriously exploding

I do mostly PvP piracy. This isn't a piracy thread though, it's about a weirdness I've encounted when pirating. That weirdness is other player's ships exploding well before I have them at 0% hull.

This has happened several times to me, and I always assumed it was people self-destructing. The latest really baffled me though. I was trying to rob a Tyep-6, and a rather begging message came through the chat saying "please don't kill me, I only just got this ship". I hold fire when I see this, though there are some shots in the air still, and I didn't react instantly. At this stage I'd only just punched through his sheilds. His hull was at 90+%. A few more rounds hit him, and he then exploded, increasing my bounty.

Now I'm in the piracy business because I enjoy it, and I'm not out to ruin other peoples' experiences. I try to avoid killing people except as a last resort. I never ask for more than half of somebody's cargo/10t (whichever is lower). Most of my targets are moving rares, and would make a profit even if they gave me the cargo I asked for, as the markup is >200%. I really don't want to go around killing people who don't want to be killed, nor do I actually cause co-operative (and even some no co-operative) people to actually make a loss on a run. When people ask me nicely not to kill them, and it's obviously not a ruse to escape, I won't kill them.

So why did this chap blow up? I can't think he'd self-destruct after such a message? Is there a synchronisation bug whereby damage I see on his ship is different from damage he sees on his ship? Maybe he it silent running and overheated? I'm really not sure, but is anybody aware of a glitch that would cause player ships to unexpectedly go pop?

Maybe he was bluffing for time so he could self destruct instead? Kinda weird behaviour if so but you get all sorts...

This happens alot when i bounty hunt, you simply destroyed something of the ships parts before the hull hit 0%, FSD and the Powerplant are such canidates, even if you dont target it, it happens sometimes

Yep, you hit their subsystems and sent them back to a sidewinder.

(Their pleading message indicates they didn't have credits for insurance.
If they'd self-destructed your bounty wouldn't have increased.)

Ouch, I hope OP feels very guilty and decides to reform his/her pirating ways!
A little guilty. Not going to change unless you can tell me any other challenging way to have fun in this game. I always give the target plenty of warning before I open fire though, so they never go into the fight without knowing what they're getting themselves in for.

This happened to me as well. And also one crazy thing: pirated a guy who tried to escape. He vanished with 1% so I was suspecting logoff combat tactic. I interdicted him again, he was on 93% only few moments later. I killed him and got bounty for murder. Then he appeared again but with 91%, killed him and again got murder bounty. They I couldn't find him anymore. Yes, it was a human commander.

Step one: make sure pirate shoots first (=bounty for pirate)
Step two: go about causing as much damage as you can to said pirate (=at best kill them! at worst repair costs for pirate)
Step three: If all else fails hit self destruct before loss of cargo (=certain loss for pirate)

I like to think that I add a little excitement to piracy, shame it is so rare.

Or you could drop some cargo and save yourself some credits :)

That is the least interesting way of being pirated. Running, fighting, overheating and exploding, or being blown up by missiles are all much more fun then giving them free money. :)

Begging for mercy and then self destructing though? Seems odd...

Oh there are so many ways to annoy pirates :) My own favourite recipe goes something like this:

Step One: Submit to Interdiction

Step Two: Laugh at their threats

Step Three: FTP the noods they made for their girlfriend to their wife.

Step Four: Profit :)
