Other than the Facebook

What Virtual reality sets are compatible with Elite Dangerous?.
Facebook's Oculus headset is still in Development is it not? (=> bear in mind the one who's asking the question has never used a VR set, nor knows much about them)

Also how much should I imagine spending to get a decent VR set?
.
I'm guessing you can't simply use the 3D glasses you get With newer 3D television sets?

Oculus Rift are due to release a commercial version often referred to as CV1, but dates and price not set (2015?).
You can use 3D TV and glasses even red cyan glasses on a normal TV just to get the 3D feel, but its not VR, this is how I started.

there is no other "good" and affordable VR headset on the market.

any others out there right now AFAIK are either rubbish, or essentially using the tech from a DK1, tho possibly with a high res screen.

Sony do a HMD but its expensive and not VR. They are also working on a PS4 compatible HMD, morpheus but that is not out yet either.

right now you need a DK2, or be patient and wait another 6-12months ish for the production oculus rift.

Thanks for the swift and good feedback ,both of you :) (I'll probably wait until there's a commercial release before maybe dipping my foot in then)

I'm not sure what you mean there. The experimental 3D options include an SBS mode. Doesn't that still work with most modern tellies? Mine is a few years old and it was no hassle to get working, although I don't use it now that I got an Oculus Rift.
