Other VR Flight Sims

Many VR Elite players are also into Flight sims. It's a natural fit for VR and owners of Hotas.

What games have you tried? Do they have settings that would allow you to make it more Arcady when showing someone VR.

IL-2 BoS got a VR update. I'm thinkung about picked by that one up. How are the menus?

Aerofly FS2 is rather good. It's a not really arcady but it not and buttons glore either. I've plonked people in it and they got on ok.

DCS is VR compatible but it's got way to many and buttons. Very hardcore, start up sequences, the lot. Also the frame rate is terrible ASW is always on pretty much whatever the settings.

Aerofly FS2 I'd recommend though.

Warthunder(in sim mode) is superb in VR!
I tried DCS and Il2 and unfortunately they are not as smooth in VR because of stutters (one day maybe they may optimize for VR but so far there is no comparison to warthunder as far as fps/stutters).
Elite and warthunder are the only games I've been playing since more than a year now!

I fly dcs and really enjoy the blackshark in VR!

Also have il2 bos and warthunder. All are cool, though dcs and il2 are difficult to see outside cockpit. Aka spotting targets and such. I am completely new to warthunder thus not much time in it.

Since you moved to start a new thread discussing flightsims in vr (good idea), I'll transfer my post from the other thread as such regarding my thoughts on War Thunder and BOX as they call the combined theaters now, first:
"Even in sim mode, I find War Thunder a little arcade-like. Gajin bought rights to the original IL2 engine and heavily modified that. It's a 12 year old engine. Il2 BOS and newer theaters is the creation of merging 1C and 777 studios(Rise of Flight). The FM is excellent and the recently added VR is the best in a flightsim ATM, imo. I would say the best FM of a WW2 aircraft is likely DCS's P51 since they own a real one and it is the bases for what they call their PFM or professional flight model."
--adding re your question:BOX menus are all easy to read as are all the others. I fly them all and don't play outside VR. Like ED, the immersion is paramount for me.

DCS World has the best flight models and seems to be preferred in VR (many RL pilots over there) despite being at an early stage of implementation. Hard to read some gauges in some aircraft and tough to get more than pd 1.5 even on high end hardware. DCS has a robust forum of people comparing settings (like here) in order to get the best VR settings for any given hardware.

Aerofly FS2 looks as good as BOX in VR (maybe better) all settings cranked up. It's early in it's development so only a few areas to fly in and nothing to blow up, of course. Flight models and controls are pretty good, but not fully incorporated at this early stage.

Anyone remotely interested in flying will, I think, enjoy all of these at some level. It depends on how you like to play which one you might prefer the most, though. My personal rating in that regard.

For VR implementation:
1-BOX and Aerofly FS almost a tie
2-War Thunder (a very close second)
3-DCS ok, but lots to improve on
For Flight model:
1-DCS no doubt in my mind
2-BOX
3-WT in sim mode
4-AeroFly (incomplete)

For gameplay:
Highly subjective. Depends on how you play, but they are all great fun in their own way.

Since you are showing an interest in BOX, I add this. I have been flying sims since FS1 by subLogic and have flown most of them. BOX is an excellent sim in VR and the community is all abuzz over it having been added. I doubt you would be disappointed with it.

I would add that despite DCS's being at the bottom of my VR ranking, my love of helos makes it my number 2 go to in VR for that reason alone. It is truly sublime in that regard and it is the only one I would call a simulator in every sense of the term.

From my perspective having them all in VR is a plus for any VR gamer and we are lucky to have them. My hope is that 1C/777 will heed the outcry to bring Rise of Flight to VR, then I will be able to fly in WW1, WW2 and WW3 (let's hope not) scenarios.

I have tried Aerofly and it seems to be working really well.

I'm an old fan of IL-2, I never picked up BoX due to the lack of VR, but it sounds like now is the time to jump in!

I do like games that have an "easy" mode for when I have guests (fathers in laws) over who want a quick try without the fuss.

I picked up Ultrawings during the Rift sale, and it's actually great fun. They're the first ones to use Touch. The graphics are a little simple and arcade, but I find the implementation is good fun. Actually holding the stick and pushing the buttons with touch works quite well.

A few lesser known titles that have native VR support :

  • Vector 36 : futuristic hovering vehicles sim racer with a heavy emphasis on physics. Surprisingly deep for a one-man endeavor : I've spent more than 10 hours with it and it works particularly well in VR due to the vehicles handling being heavy on drifting.
  • Red Bull Air Racing : an F2P air racing game by the studio that made Project CARS. I tried it, did not like the flight model nor the visuals that have the same issues in VR as PCars's (lots of aliasing).
  • Lunar Flight : it's basically ye olde Lunar Lander in VR. I own it but did not try it yet.
  • Combat Air Patrol 2 : a Harrier simulator, that looks like it has potential. Still in early access though.

I see Aerofly has just updated. Will have to check that out. Lots of additions in the readme. As far as the inlaws go, you can always put them in a cockpit in the air with any of these and see how they handle it. For the fun factor, try Mount Wingsuit (Steam) but I would not put them in that without a mop and bucket until you're sure they have VR legs. It does seem that most flight simmers can handle VR sickness better than average.

I think VR is just a natural fit for cockpit type games.

What about a mech game? I did hear that the next Mechwarrior will be built for VR. That sim would be amazing

What is BOX? I'm having no luck with Google.

Ah I see, I missed it was part of IL-2, thanks.

Sorry my "BOX as they call the combined theaters now" remark may have been a little unclear. It is how they refer to BOS+BOM+BOK on the Sturmovick forum rather than talking about just one theater of operation. You can buy each individual theater as a stand alone, but they all run from a single launcher.

IL2 BoX (Battle of Staligrad, Moscow, Kuban) is the main reason I haven't found the time to play ED in recent months, I'm addicted. Came here looking to see if Frontier have added VRWorks support, because I have 1080's in SLI and wondered what games looked like with one GPU /Eye.

I can't seem to find any mention of it outside very old locked threads, does anyone know if ED has VRWorks support ?

Nope. As far as I have read it, VRSLI is only partially functional in DX11 and really comes to life in DX 12. It also requires Pascal gen cards, support in the game and in the hmd drivers. Given the relatively small install base of sli users and the fact that it is a Nvidia only solution, I suspect it's not a high priority on FDev's "to do" list. Wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

:( Gutted

just buy a 1180 next year (possibly will be branded 2080)

i reckon it will manage ED on VR ultra and allow some shiny super sampling all off 1 card. no need for SLI and chances are if you sell both your 1080s next year it will fund the single card. its what i plan to do. Nvidia works VR SLI sounds nice in practice but if hardly anyone supports it properly what is the point (imo).
