I have always been an advocate of being able to get the ship of your choice faster / sooner, so I might just as well post here. From my suggestions in the past:
- credit loans
Give me the ship now, let me earn money and enjoy flying it, make me pay 10 times the price for it.
- lower ship costs, higher maintenance / running costs
What if an Anaconda were to cost just 50mil, but you'd have to pay 1mil eveytime you docked (call it a large ship docking fee)?
- ship lending
Let me fly a ship for a short period of time for large enough rental costs, send *ZA ENTERDICTIONS* after me when I don't bring it back. [cool]
- mission ships
Want me to fight in that CZ? Better give me a Vulture. Yes, I know about instant ship transfer. No, I don't have a Vulture of my own to instantly transfer here. *hangs up the comms
- black market ships
So no one really though of buying a Cutter and putting it on sale at an Anarchy port for 1billion?
Ships used to have variable running costs as a fuel tax but it was removed
Same for increased maintenance/integrity and repair costs for larger ships being more expensive
It helped differentiate the Shipyard as Lakon Ships has lower running costs to the High End Gutamaya Ships for instance.
One of the reason why today people say the Clipper is superior to the Type & in every way, is that the Clipper used to cost a fair bit to run and repair, when the Type 7 did not.
So you had an expensive to run Clipper with a tiny fuel tank, vs the low cost, large tank Lakon.

Same game since start. It was a slog to finally get my Imperial Courier. I had to keep refreshing the mission boards hundreds of times for my Rep. I just refuse to do the same thing over and over and over again after that.
You know you could have probably had more fun playing the game, and ranked up at the same time, ended up with more credits, and not be so jaded due to refreshing the mission board
hundreds of time for Rep, when it takes far less to actually just obtain a good rep by playing the game and doing missions and trade and what not as it comes up...
You only ruin it for yourself by stubbornly repeating a task you don't enjoy, rather than looking for another way to achieve you goals, in ways you enjoy.
