Other ways to open doors?

I brought a grade 2 combat suit and some weapons whilst walking around a station. I thought I would give combat ago, so I took up a mission to kill 4 scavengers. I killed them all and naturally I went around searching, I couldn't get into any of the buildings. I looked up and everyone said to get the suit with the arc cutter. I can do this but is there no other way to open doors without resorting to putting on another suit just to use another tool?

Short answer: Nope

Long answer: Nope. There isn't in the context you mentioned

Scavengers implies a shutdown base. Shut down doors can only cut open.

In a powered up settlement you are not really forced to use the Maverick suit and the blowtorch.
You can use e-breaches to bypass any locks
Or you can steal someone else ID - with an ID level 3 you will have access anywhere - but if you get scanned you will be agroed and fired at
Or you can just wait/follow someone to open a door and get in with them

When you killed those scavengers could you scan them for their permit lvl.
When you have permit lvl 3 all doors go open, aslong there is power at the settlement of course.

Not it the power is still down.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys. So if I kill the bad guys I'm free to run to my ship change my gear then start checking out the place for suit and gun mats without worrying about more enemies coming to kick my ?

Depends, sometimes you will get extra enemies dropped down in the settlement
It's quite random

If you force doors open (either by e-breach or overcharge) everyone will be able to enter without the need for access levels.

What I do in these situations, when I am inside a base, is to periodically check the Contacts panel from my radial menu: if anyone is around, or a new batch of hostiles has arrived, I will see it there, and act accordingly.
Many times I've noticed that new enemies arrived and I hadn't heard them.

No surprises for me, but I could surprise them!

Thank you. I have another question. I want to get into foot combat a little. What sort of missions would be most recommended for a starter? Just to build my confidence a bit
Go to frontline solutions and enlist to fight on ground conflict zones. There's no risk of losing data when you die since you will respawn in an npc dropship above the battlefield.

My advise is to keep running in a Maverick

You can check this thread linked below, people will post findings regarding pre-upgraded and pre-modded suits and weapons.
IF you dont already have a Grade 3 Maverick and grade 3 weapons - you may be able to get them, but be advised that they tend to go away really fast.
Basically there is no point to try to go and get some if more than 15 minute passed from the announcement.
Alternatively, you can post a request there and ask people to PM you some locations

And do I need to search for a system that's currently in a state of civil war or war?

Yes, and from the Frontline solutions desk, make sure you pick up Low intensity ground combat zones, preferably close to the station you are in already
You can also go there in your ship, land nearby, disembark, dismiss your ship and only then pick a side using the E - key (the default setting)

Noted. I'll check that out. Does taking part in these fights pay and add towards reputation as well as merc rank?

Yes - for all of them.
So make sure the faction you fight against is not getting hostile to you - especially if they own any stations you may want to visit
Also, while the pay is really small for Low CZ, it gets really big for High CZ

Yes, that's sounds perfect. I'll be sure to check it out tonight when I'm online. Low CZ sounds good enough for me to get some practice and when the time is right challenge myself with medium/high CZ.

What do you know about settlement raid missions? I was looking at then last night, do they have threat level 3 raids? And if I killed everyone am I free to loot the place or is it stealing? (All legal jobs)

Find an anarchy system, then in the system map note which factions are anarchy, look through the list of odyssey settlements and find the ones for those factions, and go there and kill everyone and steal everything. All legal. Repeat.

This guide has great info on how to approach missions, how guards react, how to disable alarms, etc.

I would advise to check Inara first and pick on Settlements owned by Anarchy factions that already are the bottom of the influence pool in their systems
If you do it like this, you will not negatively impact Anarchy factions that are Player supported.

Hitting settlements that are NOT owned by Anarchy factions means that you will get bounties and notoriety. IF you can deal with that, go for it.
Else, resume to Anarchy settlements, preferably owned by factions not supported by players and already at the bottom of their systems
