Othet cmdr's WITHOUT hours inside Cobra and/or ASP?

I was reading this other thread about what Elite ship mostly resembles Millenium Falcon. Many thought it would be Cobra mkIII as it is THE iconicship of Elite. ASP was also mentioned many times, for it is a very popular vessel.

And I realized that I have not even tried neighter of those during my over 300h of ED! I own Cobra mkIV, but it is still in it's original packaging. So, am I even a real cmdr or not... I'm not absolutelly sure why I have skipped these ships, I guess mainly I just wanted to avoid the most popular ships and do things my own way... Yes, and I hate how ASP looks! I love Lakon line, except this one...

Well, I was wondering how rare this is, are there others who have never used Cobra or ASP? Or have no desire to do so?

I currently have an ASP for exploring, a Python for general combat, and a Vulture for community goal combat with more pvp then usual.. But I have never really used a Cobra; save one time when I bought one as a simple shuttle to get me back to another stored ship, and I got rid of it after.... In the begining I went from the sidewinder to an eagle. Ended up having so much fun in that, that I just kept it until I could afford the ASP.. Skipped right over the Cobra myself.

From Sidewinder (which I still have) to the Viper Mk4. Skipping the Cobra Mk3 and the Asp, this will do fine as an armored, well defended explorer, trader and occasional bounty hunter. Closer to the Millennium Falcon as far as I'm concerned , like the stock Corellian YT-1300 the Falcon was built on the Viper Mk4 wasn't built primarily for combat - it's a true multipurpose ship. Oddly enough the Cobra Mk4 is very similar and consequently closer to the Falcon too, though the Mk3 pilots hate it :)

The Asp and Cobra III are both loved for a reason. For me it's especially the Asp. I personally think it's ugly but the thing is just so extremely handy to have around I keep buying them.

You can absolutely 'progress' onto the more expensive ships without flying them but to be honest I think you're missing out experiencing some of the most versatile ships in the game. They're just useful.

I imagine with Elite's ever improving ship diversity it isn't unheard of to skip the Cobra. Back at release and before then, the Cobra was the be-all-end-all of reasonably priced ships and a fantastic all rounder. Even now, I believe it's still the fastest ship in the game, and performs well in just about any role. Its single weakness is the terrible hardpoint layout which more or less forces the use of four gimballed weapons to avoid convergence issues at close range. The Asp excels at exploration and hauling medium amounts of high value goods, and is fair although easy to hit in combat. However it isn't quite the swiss army knife that the Cobra is for newer commanders due to its more prohibitive cost.

Almost doesn't compute how anyone could skip the Cobra as they are progressing up for the first time....Asp sure, but the Cobra?

I went Sidewinder > Eagle > Viper > Vulture > Python

Very easy to skip Cobra. Ive never flown one. But i will kit one out one day for some fun.

I guess it depends on what is important to you. I wanted the Cobra as this is the ship I flew back in '84 - so it was an important ship for me. After that I wanted the Python - so I went Sidewinder > Cobra > Python.

And I haven't left the Python since. (Except for my first planetary landing - which had to be in the Cobra :))

I guess others love Asp and other hate it. I just love my asp and I am having a hard time trading it to python. But at least I have some asp pics to hang in pythons cockpit :) Say what you say but Asp is photogenic.

I went back to it, but my favorite ship is still the Courier.

Nothing else is that nimble and precise. It is my favorite haz rez ship.

But when I have to haul more than 8 or 12 ton, the Cobra ship of choice for running missions.

Oh, and makes the best PvP skirmisher bar none.

I don't know why people think a ship with similar abilities to the Millenium Falcon would be considered something to strive for. I mean that pile of junk is always in trouble, falling apart and running away from stuff it can't handle. They win one little fight with 3 tiny tie fighters and everyone's like YAY we're alive? I'd say the ship most like the MF in Elite is the T6; it's possible to do most things in it, but quite rubbishly.

edit
I'd say the Asp would be an upgrade to the Falcon as it can actually do most things well.

I flew a Cobra Mk III, although not for very long - I just hated it for combat. In the Cobra, it often ends up as jousting. And the small hardpoint placement makes me want to eviscerate myself.

I enjoyed my brief time in the Cobra but have never been a fan of the side by side seating layouts. I prefer to be seated in the centre of the cockpit. It's the pettier reason I don't own a FDL anymore.

I went, Sidewinder > Eagle > Viper III > Diamondback Scout > Imperial Courier, never touched a cobra or Asp, but i'm not much into the trading side @ the moment tbh.

I have used the Cobra for quite some time and I really didn't like that ship. It has a lot of things that make it a very good ship, but at the same time something simply doesn't feels right for me.
I hoped that the Cobra Mk IV would make me like the Cobra, but it's to slow.

Same with the Asp. A really good ship, one if not the best explorer and rare trader - and yet, not the ship for me.

I prefer the Viper over the Cobra and the T-6 over the Asp. Don't know exactly why.

Its easy for combat-only players to skip Cobra and Asp.

Players who do a bit of all, will hardly skip either of these ships... They are just so extremely useful in so many scenarios, especially the Asp...

I have a year of play and always have a Cobra and an Asp on the hangar and they never catch dust for long.
