Othet cmdr's WITHOUT hours inside Cobra and/or ASP?

Yeah I can see combat only pilots skip the cobra/asp. I was into smuggling so I went sidewinder-adder-cobra-asp (long time)-clipper-python I only recently started doing combat and I've used everything except FDL, Dropship/DB series, Conda, and 1.5 ships.

I hear the DBs are supposed to be great for the silent running thing would love to acquire that skill set someday.

Its easy for combat-only players to skip Cobra and Asp.

Players who do a bit of all, will hardly skip either of these ships... They are just so extremely useful in so many scenarios, especially the Asp...

I have a year of play and always have a Cobra and an Asp on the hangar and they never catch dust for long.

Great answer! It pretty much boils down to this.

Eagle (never moved the Sidewinder even out of the Starting Hangar) - Viper MkIII - Imp. Courier - Vulture - Imp. Clipper - Fer-de-Lance - Python
.
Never sold Ships I actually played with, kept them all and added a few Eagle Taxis to stay on some remote Stations I visited. Added an Imp. Eagle when it came out to give it a try, which is one of the Taxis now.
After getting the Clipper I took a 4 hour ride in an Asp Explorer just to give it a try, did not like it at all. Sold it.
.
When going out alone I usally use my Clipper or FdL (depending on mood and goals), sometimes the Python if I feel like cleaning up some CZ or RES.
If I go out with my Wingmates who do not have that amout of assets jet, the Viper and the Courier see some Action too.
.
Cheers
Nuit

P.S.: I did not get a free Eagle, I took some transport missions and sold the cargo, caring about the fines later, brought me about 60.000 Cr. without leaving the Hangar (and almost 100.000 cr. in fines) but I just see it as a starting loan ;-)

Funny. I flew the Cobra 3 for a bit - it was nice for the speed but the firepower was severely limited and I sold it on. I had an Asp for a bit, but didn't get along with it for reasons I can't fathom. I think it may have been because I downgraded from mostly-A ship to a Mostly-C ship in order to get the Asp?

So far the biggest slice of time i've spent has been in the DBX - although I can't articulate why I particularly like it.

Almost doesn't compute how anyone could skip the Cobra as they are progressing up for the first time....Asp sure, but the Cobra?

If you're progressing as a pure combat pilot then it's easy to skip it. Things aren't the same as beta anymore.

This was surprise! That combat pilot might skip these. But I am a trader/wannabesmuggler by heart and entered my first combat after almost 200h of game time. Did one short exploration trip with DBE and loved it. By then I had always escaped and lost my ship only once.

My path: Hauler -> Type-6 - DBE - Type-7 - DBS - Vulture - Keelback
I have not sold my ships and now making my way to Python. Using it as a stepping stone to Type 9.

Thanks for all the responses, really nice to know that there are others that have skipped Cobra and I may have been too harsh with my opinion towards the look of ASP...

Just try an Asp and enjoy the view. Even if you think that the ship is ugly (I don't) then fear not, you can't tell from inside it!

The Asp (note the capitalization :)) is an interesting one in that some Cmdrs absolutely hate it while others absolutely love it. I fall in the later camp. Between trading, smuggling, and exploring, I have spent more time and made more money in an Asp than any other ship in the game.

I've spent a lot of time in the Cobra Mk. III, I even have two. One for exploration and one is my smuggler.

The Asp, however..well..I bought one. Flew a few systems, docked and sold it. It's such an ugly ship and I hated flying it. We just didn't bond at all.

But, Cobra's, I love them!

I've spent many hrs in a Cobra and although I've moved through Vulture and now FAS I still go back to the Cobra for some mission specific stuff.

In fact only this week I was using one heavily to do some ranking stuff in the Fed - carting small cargo, taking messages and covering distance whilst evading various interdictions.
-
This is where the Cobra MkIII excels - a truly magnificent ship.
-
Never tried and Asp, too ugly.
Sorry!

The Asp looks like a Proboscis monkey, I tried one in one of the betas and was not impressed.
I was wrong, way wrong - it took a long time for me to see the light that it's actually one of the most versatile and useful ships in the game. Plus it sounds like it has RR Merlin engines when it's on cam, and whistles like a Clanger while coasting, which is quite endearing.
Not having owned a Cobra III is grounds for instant disqualification from the Pilot's Federation!

As much as I dislike the Cobra and the Asp, I have hours in both. The Asp in particular is my money maker. I've seen more hours in it than any other ship, even though I utterly despise it from an aesthetic point of view.

I was reading this other thread about what Elite ship mostly resembles Millenium Falcon. Many thought it would be Cobra mkIII as it is THE iconicship of Elite. ASP was also mentioned many times, for it is a very popular vessel.

And I realized that I have not even tried neighter of those during my over 300h of ED! I own Cobra mkIV, but it is still in it's original packaging. So, am I even a real cmdr or not... I'm not absolutelly sure why I have skipped these ships, I guess mainly I just wanted to avoid the most popular ships and do things my own way... Yes, and I hate how ASP looks! I love Lakon line, except this one...

Well, I was wondering how rare this is, are there others who have never used Cobra or ASP? Or have no desire to do so?

Yes you are a real commander...no you do not have to spend time in either of these ships of you don't want to ....there are probably a lot of people that have skipped one or both...they are fun though...and do have some purpose....you should try em out at least...just so you have an idea about em...Cobra and Asp make great little smugglers.

"Not using an Asp at some point during the game is an offence punishable by death..." or so I believe the announcement in that Lakon showroom at the last station I visited went...

Everyone should have a Cobra Mk3 in the garage, if only because you can smuggle, explore and fight knowing that nobody can catch you as long as you're quick enough on the boost button.

I am the antithesis of this thread title. Started in a Cobra III (backer starter package). Flew nothing else for a while year. Now upgraded to an ASP Exp. Those are the only 2 ships I've flown. (Apart from the Eagle in early beta that was wiped and not part of my CMDR's history.)

Cobra us and always was a great looking ship design. Asp, however, looked good in wireframe, but not so good in E: D. That said, how a ship looks is not very relevant. I own an Evo. Not a great looking car, but literally unbeatable combination of performance, practically, every day usability, and price. Not unlike both the Asp and Cobra...

Cheerz
