Our new African animals: what can we expect

So now that the dlc has been announced and we can confirm the new animals let’s talk predictions on what their requirements would be.

Rhinos: I am wondering if they will get any interspecies enrichment with certain animals, I know elephants and rhinos don’t get along in the wild but maybe another savannah animal would cooperate with our rhinos. Of course they are grassland and maybe desert biome. Probably need a good amount of space. Maybe live in small or medium sized groups of 1-6?

Meerkats: I’ve seen a lot about how a meerkat pack structures and I’m not sure how they will function in game. I’ve seen their “burrowing” on the trailer and I wonder if it’s just simply a shelter or something they randomly do. Any suggestions on their biomes feel free to mention and their group size. I’d imagine they would be tolerant of aardvarks.

Fennec fox: a true desert animal and the only Northern African habitat animal (the Northern African theme looks great but it’s a bit odd that there is only 2 animals representing the region). I’d imagine 2 pairs would be the limit and would not need a lot of space.

African Penguin aka cape penguin: aquatic for sure. Probably can live with a unlimited amount of penguins.

I also thought I heard from rumors that the dlc was going to include the black mamba (guess the predictions were ultimately wrong).

The animals look great but I think there should have been more animals that could complement the North African theme.

I hope meerkat and foxes do not need alot of space and hopefully the hitboxes wont make that impossible. Same for the penguins but they will probably still need ALOT of water.

For more animals...its so odd that they included a dromedary camel scenery piece. Its either a surprise animal, as much unlikely as it sounds or a very random piece that I dont understand lol.

I would imagine meerkats will not need much space even with large groups. Fennecs would probably be second smallest, maybe something the size that a red panda needs (without climbing of course). The Penguins I'm not sure, I imagine more than the Fennecs, and of course the Rhinos would need a lot, probably either at least the Indian Rhino space needs or even up to the hippo space needs.

Regarding the dromedary artwork, could be an easter egg but I could see it being a surprise animal too. We have had other decor for animals not in the game at base game launch, but it's weird this would be in the pack, unless it's also a base game addition.

I'm wondering which biomes each of these animals will have. The Fennec Fox will most likely be Africa Desert but the rest I'm not too sure about. With the Rhino, definitely Grassland and maybe Desert but I'm not sure. With the African Penguin, in terms of the Planet Zoo globe, they would fit into the Desert biome, and obviously they would be aquatic as well, and maybe grassland too. If anyone really knows what these animals will need, I would appreciate it because I'm a... planner🙃

All of them will be able to tolerate desert at the least. Meerkats are from the Kalahari, and the rhino range also extends into the desert to a certain extent. The rhino will also have grassland of course.

Someone should fix the English Wikipedia Page for the Meerkat. It claims that they are eusocial which would mean they would live like Bees, Ants, Termites or Naked Mole Rats

Meerkats will definitely be in grassland, and probably temperate and desert, I'd imagine. Fennec should be desert, and possibly/probably grassland. The White Rhino probably the grassland and temperate. The Penguins I'm not so sure on, but I'm going to guess temperate and maybe grassland (and aquatic as you mentioned) This is all based on wikipedia and looking at the ranges, and of course wikipedia is infallible and never wrong (extreme sarcasm).

I think grassland is the safest bet for all of them.

I don't think any of them will be temperate. White rhino will be grassland/desert, meerkat desert/grassland, penguin desert/aquatic, and fennec desert.

Are there even Rainforests where they live? 🤔
Sorry about that. There are no rainforests where they live. I just have been thinking of another African animal, probably the Aardvark, which doesn't really make sense either. Anyway, Meerkats only live in southwest Africa in the countries of Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. They can be found in the Namib and Kalahari deserts as well as the famous Okavango Delta. This means that their biome classification will be Africa, Desert, Grassland.

Some of that information is just based on Google

I can see that, I think when I think of temperate Africa it's actually grassland. It gets confusing sometimes!

I really hope the penguins get desert it’ll be cool to create arid rocky beachfronts for them.
This is exactly what I'm planning. I can't wait to build an exhibit for these guys! An arid, rocky, "messy" beach setting would be perfect. I am putting them in a desert zoo, which I hope will be ok for them. Nonetheless, the gears are turning!

literature says, the white rhinos need some coverage, so not completely open landscapes but some trees and busches as well. (https://www.rhinoresourcecenter.com)

So what do we get?
Mostly wondering what group size is for fennec fox, space requirements and herd number for rhinos
Do the scarabs get a brand new exhibit look or they using an older model?
