Out in the black profits are lucrative

Amassing credits in elite (meta aside) is a time consuming process.
3.5kly outside the bubble I've found a 95% undiscovered region.
FC with 20 fully engineered ships with different roles.
But the one I'm using is a conda built for running cool.
Fully equipped with all mining tools, mapping tools, and a x2 hangar for buggy.
Filling the carriers hold with deep core, laser mined, surface/sub surface mined ores.
Mapping & tagging as I go. But the most lucrative aspect has to be the discovered bonus for exobiology.
The whole affair is paying really well. No pirates no bgs or pp to worry about.
So if your stuck for a way to earn credits, get out into the unknown unmapped areas and do all 3 disciplines.

You could do only this.
Nothing else really compares to exobio - sure, if a more varies experience always helps, but if credits is what you're looking for...

Exobiology payouts are exorbitant.

Recently I made a really long trip and when I came back I had passed through about 300 systems, about 50+ previously undiscovered, and having DSS'd about a dozen WW's and ELW's, and the total payout was about 40 million.

I also scanned a dozen plants on 6 planets (that had no first footfall). The payout was 550 million.

I didn't count how much time I spent doing both things, but I would estimate that in total perhaps somewhere in the ballpark of maybe 10-15 hours for system traveling and scanning, and maybe 3-4 hours for the exobiology, give or take.

It's ridiculous.

Time-wise, not difficulty level, you would make far more money@AXCZ, Spire Sites so from this perspective I don't think exobiology is exorbitant tbh.
