out in the sticks

Are you playing out in the sticks, on the frontier...or are you closer in to the core systems, the old worlds, empire or feds?

I'm about 150 LY south(?) of Sol and about 30LY below the zero plane.

It still seems fairly populated round here, maybe 1 in 3 systems has stations....mixture of independents & federation systems, lots of anarchies and corporate states.

Iv been around and about, but since I was 'born' sort of in the middle/edge of the Federation iv sort of skirted around the edges a bit.

Im currently still fairly near the core of the empire, that being said given they are typically only about 100-200LY deep, depending how you look at it its hard to say weather im in the sticks or not.

That being said, Eastern Time player who just came back from his second exploration expedition of about 4 days, and now trading around the edge of the Empire. Iv not seen all that many people so I would say it feels like the sticks.

Almost feel like every time I pull up in my asp and gas it up the guy there is like "Just out for a rip are ya bud"

In Traveller, there's a convention for expressing directions (not using the z, or vertical axis):

Towards the core of the galaxy is called "Coreward". It's usually represented as "up" or "north" on the maps.
"Rimward" is the opposite.

"Spinward" is in the direction of the galaxy's clockwise spin, and is the "left" or "west" direction.
"Trailing" is the opposite.

An actual galactic co-ordinate system might use a spherical x,y.z from the mean core of the galaxy. Spherical trigonometry, anyone?

A game mapping system would use a Cartesiian (plane), divided into quadrants. Traveller, with no z axis, uses this, somewhat.

The zero (or 180) of the x axis would pass through Sol in both methods, for a human-developed mapping system. Sol could not be the center, for obvious reasons.

I love our maps. I just wish the left quarter of the screen wasnt wasted. A "retract map legend" feature would be nice. Also, some x,y,z co-ordinates displayed would be nice, too.

I was on the edge. However I came in a bit to get the cash together to do proper exploring upgrades and to build Alliance reputation. I'm pootling around about Alioth at the moment. Once I've got the scanners I'm after and friendly Alliance rep I'm of rimwards (if that is not a euphemism).
