Out of desperation!

Hello chaps,

I've had this bug which has meant, since the last update, the game is completely unplayable for me. The problem is that while my mouse seems to working properly, when playing the game, it rapidly shifts from one item to the next to the next, so rapidly in fact that actually clicking on anything has become an extremely arduous task! I do, of course, realise that this is not the most appropriate place to post such a bug report up, it's just that I've already posted in the bug forum; and have yet to get any meaningful response. The reason why then, out of sheer desperation, I'm posting it in here as that I hope to God that somehow someone on here might have experienced something vaguely similar and figured out a workaround. The thing is, you see, is that I've dreamed of flying a courier, or something like it, in an up-to-date version of Elite since I was a teenager... Now that there's a sale on I'm really keen to get stuck in a purchase a clipper, but this bug is stopping me from capitalising on the current offer - it's extremely frustrating!

Here's the bug thread where I originally posted this up, if any of you have a workaround, then please, please, please, please, please help!

All kinds of mouse? Have you tried another brand/type of mouse on another USB port? Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the game?

Have tried moving the mouse to another USB slot, have not yet tried re-installing the game, should I? I'll buy a cheap mouse tomorrow and see if that fairs any better than the current high-end gaming mouse I've successfully used without issue up until this point!

I notice you have a joystick connected too. Go to Options/Controls and look under "Interface Mode" and check you don't have something conflicting in there, e.g. the wrong axis. BOTH columns apply for Controls.

Just a thought...

Thanks, but no joy!

Yes definitely check for double assignments. Unplug the joystick for a test and see if that affects it. Unplug in a save location.

I've not experienced this in the game, but had something similar in another context. In the controls of the game, is mouse sensitivity (or is it speed?) Too high?

Also, does the mouse behave OK outside of the game? If its a wireless on have you checked its batteries? Do you have another mouse you could try (to exclude the possibility the its the mouse itself...

Good luck

Edit: another thought, could it be some accessibility option set somewhere, just you mention that it jumps between options, and that sounds like its auto focusing maybe?

Replace the mouse with another one as a test. Check the options there is a mouse option in there that maybe the cause I am at work so can't look it up, but check there and change it. I think it was use hardware mouse or something like that. worth a try.

Saitek x55 and rudder pedals, both work perfectly in all other applications and had no problem before the last patch, I haven't changed my rig since then... Am re-installing to see if that brings any joY!

When the mouse pointer is away from the options, e.g. in the station screen if it's hovering over the Galnet bit, do the menu items still get selected at random? Or is it just when the mouse pointer is over the items?

EDIT: Have you tried enabling the Hardware Mouse option in Options/Graphics? I doubt that's relevant, but it might show you something else going on.

Others got a good idea here. Unplug everything possible but kb and mouse, select the default preset.

Broken mouse is possible. The game refuse to play nice with my wireless mouse after I dropped it. Buttons work on option screen (detected), but during combat it refuses to do the assigned function. I dont feel like replacing it as I only use it for trading during break at work...

Just a thought, i get some wierd menu effects occassionally (no need for details) but have you tried loading the game in a lower res and using borderless window mode ?
I suggest trying 1680x1050 borderless, worth a try at least ?

I have mouse selection issues with Track IR switched on. When I am checking the station net it kind of does its own thing. I switch off Track IR and the problem goes away.

So the obvious question is are you using Track IR?

If not, ignore this post.

The mouse works perfectly with all other games. When in game it appears to work perfectly, as in it occupies the same space as it should do and moves accordingly, the issue is that for some reason it rapidly switches between tabs regardless of where the mouse actually is on screen. As said, am re-installing so will see what happens then. Cheers for your help chaps, will keep you posted.

Nope, not using trackIR, but thanks for suggesting a possible solution!

Doesn't Windows have some kind of jump mouse cursor to dialog button feature? Maybe something along these lines has been accidentally activated in Windows itself?

Okay, to me that sounds like some of the mouse axes are assigned to the menu navigation functions. Because if a mouse axis is interpreted as a button, moving the mouse along that axis triggers the button very rapidly.

I suppose you have already done so, but for completeness sake, have you tried deleting all of ED's configuration files and setting up your controls from scratch?

I've deleted ED completely and am re-downloading...

This could be a keyboard error also, if the mouse appears to work fine. Picture holding down the "s" key after you select starport services, is that similar to how it is acting?

Got ninja'd lol - Yeah this actually sounds more like a keyboard issue to me. As if a key is stuck, one that controls the selection of different menu Items. Try loading up the game and logging in at a station without the keyboard plugged in at all.

Is this laptop or desktop?

Also, open a word or text document and specifically test each key on the keyboard. Make sure they all respond with one button press and no repeats. Also check your sticky key settings in the options for mouse/keyboard. Check the sensitivity for double click on the mouse as well, make sure it isnt too high (i.e. having to double click REALLY fast to open a folder)

Edit: one other thing, check the background programs that are running. Make sure no adware or anything like that, or even anti-malware/virus programs causing conflicts - background programs can cause the system to assume button presses - this is highly unlikely because other games are just fine...but from experience...you really never know

Not sure if you might have the same issue: on my X52 Pro I have been getting random mouse movement due to issues with the Throttle. For me it is intermittent, moving the Throttle a bit will take care of it. This might not show in every game, as the mouse sensitivity for the miniature mouse stick is ridiculously high in ED. I will have to do a warranty return soon.

One way to test if it is connected to any update: try loading the stand-alone combat training, as this has not been updated in ages. If the problem persists, it is unlikely to be update-related.
