Outward

Downloaded this RPG from Steam the other day...it's graphically pretty crude, ancient style text box NPC chatter... but boy am I hooked.

Best way I can describe it is a mix between Morrowind, Dark Souls and Baldur's Gate...it has a 2 player coop drop in/out thing too which is real fun with a mate, only pity is that it's limited to 2 players. Small Dev team which shows but I'd recommend Outward for any RPG fan who's looking for something a bit different.

This looks quite nice, especially the premise that you are not some hero of destiny.
The backpack size as a tactical choice is probably not too uncommon, but indicates that this seems to not be a loot-and-level kind of game, in which you feel you have to collect everything to progress.

To add to the first post...I found a mod on the Nexus which allows you to set the coop player limit to whatever you wish. Fairly simple install and works well, only the game host has to have the mod installed. I tested it with 2 other mates, played for several hours with no issues.

Gameplay wise...I can't really explain why it feels so much like a 3D Baldur's gate...but it does and much to it's credit.

Wow, that sounds (and surprisingly - even looks) quite awesome.

My only question is - aren't the survival mechanics... overdone?
I like you have to care about water, food, warmth, etc. but I don't want gathering the food, water and shelter to be the main activity of the game.

So if it's around the Subnautica level of "survival" (it's there but not too obtrusive), I'm going to play the hell out of it!

It's not bad for an early access game. The combat is very clunky and the A.I. can be cheesed 100 ways to sunday. Very robust crafting system with a balance of travel prep and exploration. Crafty/survival though apart of the game does not feel like a chore and you dont have to eat and drink every 5 minutes.

That all being said: definitely not a $40 game. Needs a lot more polish to be worth that. More of a $15-$20 range imho, pick it up when on sale if your interested.

The survival bits are very easily managed...if you have food and just stick it in your backpack...it goes off if you don't cook it. You can transform several bland items eg Fish/salt/seaweed into something that gives more nourishment etc...but it's not the be and end all of the game if you don't....you can catch some indigestion by eating raw foods etc..keeping warm is usually having a parka in your pack, you collect firewood and craft it into a campfire etc....different environments need different clothes, you won't be trudging around a desert in fur armour for instance or you'll overheat.

I'm not generally a lover of survival mechanics in games but this is OK.

A thing of note. There are no save slots, no map icons and no fast travel. You lose something important or the game glitches your SOL. I just lost 20 plus hours of work because I died and my backpack glitched/disappeared. Which in this game your backpack is your bank/ everything. Probably too late for a refund.
