Horizons Over heating problems

I mentioned in another thread that when my shields are off I over heat.

Last night I was exploring the Maia system. I was cruising along at minimum FSD, 30 I think it is. I was not anywhere near planets or other stuff. I decided to turn off my shields.
Suddenly my heat level shot up to 100. I had to frantically put my shields back on and temps dropped quickly to about 50.

Is this a bug?
Does it happen only in Solo?
Has anybody else had this happen?

Of course it means I can't travel incognito. Or sneak into a port or base.[sad]

try doing it in open

Did you "turn off" your shields by engaging silent running? Because that's not just turning off your shields, that's turning off your reactor's heat dissipation system so that you don't emit any heat, meaning the heat is contained in the ship and has nowhere to go and this causes you to heat up rapidly. If you mean that you disabled the shield generator in the right MFD panel, then no, that should not increase heat at all, if anything your heat might drop 1-2% due to the lower heat output from the shield generator that you just deactivated. Interestingly enough, your shields don't make any difference in stopping you from you from heating up when next to a star so that wouldn't even make a difference if you dropped close to a star either, like I said if anything it might even drop your heat slightly to turn shields off. Being next to a star makes your ship's reactor have more trouble getting rid of heat so that's why you overheat more quickly but other than the power/thermal draw shields don't usually affect heat much (unless getting hit by a thermal shock weapon, in which case they block a lot of the heat effect).

Loaded to open.
Found out silent running does not work in supercruise.
Dropped out of SC and toggled silent running on.
Heat climbed to 115 degrees over about 30 or 40 seconds.

Sorry. Devari, your reply didn't show for a moment.
I toggle according to the controls, so yes, I do turn off heat disappation. (spelling?)
Reading your thread ....
The right mfd panel KB key 4. I have tried to alter things in the list before. Can you please give me a run-down on exactly what to do.
Don't worry. Just turned it off.
Thanks for the heads up.

So this problem or bug is the same in Open play or Solo play.

I'd like to know if anybody has found this in their own games please.

I'm still confused about what you're referring to here. You said "turn off shields" in your first post but I take it you meant to say "engage silent running" instead? Because other than the fact that your shields will drop when silent running is engaged the shields don't really have anything to do with heat management per se (other than whatever amount of heat they generated themselves when active). Like I said the fact that your ship heats up during silent running is not a bug, it's how the silent running mode works. Your reactor stops dissipating heat, the heat radiator baffles are closed, so your ship started to heat up. How fast this happens depends on various factors relating to the thermal efficiency of your power plant, what modules you have running, if you're next to a star, etc. But you ship SHOULD heat up when silent running is engaged, although some very specialized "stealth" ship builds that maximize heat dissipation and reduce the thermal load from modules as much as possible can sometimes stay in silent running for quite a while before overheating.

If you want to turn off your sheilds, go to the right hand panel and deactivate your shield generator under your modules tab

I did that this afternoon. Devari gave me the heads up.

Devari: I didn't know that silent running and the turning off shields were not really connected.
I now presume silent running makes things heat up due to the game mechanics. And shields drop when silent running is engaged. (Tell me if I'm wrong)

Silent running is totally connected to turning off shields in the sense that when you engage it, it shuts down the shields. Shields produce a signature so silent as do the heat vents on ships - really easy to spot on e.g. Anacondas going into boost in combat - so the silent running makes sure the heat vents are shut, hence heating up your ship, and switches off the shields to reduce signature.
They aren't connected, as you put it, in that you can switch off shields without engaging silent running, as Jaco states above.

you can reduce even further your signature when silent running by switching off further modules too, although be aware that switching off sensors will prevent you from requesting docking! :)

PS, a heat sink launcher will enable you to run silent longer obviously.....
