I had this idea about a high-risk method of distributing power. Currently, you get 4 pips maximum, with 2 pips left over.
There could be a system to overcharge one of the modules. For example, if you overcharge SYS, ENG and WEP would be disabled completely, and heat could build up and up and up. This would leave you without engines and without weapons, but with much harder to bring down shields. The heat buildup means you couldn't stay in that state for long though (you'd have to decide between taking internal damage and keeping your shields up.)
If you overcharge ENG, you get much higher acceleration (but probably not higher top-speed) and can boost more often (due to the ENG bar filling up faster) but are left with no shields and no weapons. Again, heat buildup wouldn't allow you to do that forever.
Finally, overcharging WEP would leave you without shields and without engines, but your weapons would be able to fire without depleting the WEP bar (it fills up faster.) But again, heat buildup.
Overcharging any of the modules should mean some damage to that system (more damage the longer you overcharge it beyond its specifications. That's in *addition* to normal heat damage that occurs when you exceed critical heat levels, as a way to deal with heat sinks so that you can't completely bypass damage with them.)
Obviously the overcharge function should not be done using the normal distribution keys, in order to avoid accidental activation. They should have their own keys. Like a modifier (for example Shift+Right overcharges WEP.)
Rationale:
This mechanic would provide for a "last resort" way of saving your skin or killing an opponent if you think you're done for anyway.
