Overcoming Fear Expedition

DSSA
Qohen Leth said:
The DSSA is a project to deploy a network of support Carriers all over the galaxy to help explorers in their deep space travels. Those Carriers, offered by individuals, groups, factions or squadrons, would remain in a fixed and public location for at the very least a full year, open to all, with at least repair services, at a fair price (other services are at the owner's liberty). Beacons in the profound night, they would form a mesh of safe harbours for anyone who would need a rest stop.
➡ Info-Thread of the Project

The Expedition

This expedition is part of the DSSA project. Its split in two parts. The goal of the first part is to find an appropriate system to host a Fleet Carrier as a haven for all exploring CMDRs in the Xibalba region by prospecting an area of circa 100 ly radius around WIZZ PI-B D13-6, roughly 26k ly away from Sol. The second part of the expedition will conclude with the actual deployment of the Fleet Carrier as part of the DSSA network (as part of The Aphelion Expedition). As it is currently planned, the DSSA Aristarchos will set out withinthe first day of the update going live.
If you ever wanted to visit Xibalba/the far reaches of the Outer Arm, the DSSA Aristarchos offers you the option to get there within a few days without any travel or time commitment on your part. Just be aware that the DSSA Aristarchos will stay permanently in its destination system, so you will have to make the return trip yourself.

Part One - Scouting for the System, May 2020

Outline

The Xibalba (“Place of Fear”) region is far away, mostly light of stars and only has a few POI. Additionally, these POIs are on the far edges of the galaxy, with a low star density. Thus, these stars are hard to reach for explorers with a low- to mid-range jump range. We want to find a system to host the Fleet Carrier that meets as many of the following criteria as possible:

  • must be located in the Xibalba region, ideally towards the middle of the outer arm within Xibalba
  • must be reachable by ships with all kinds of jump ranges
  • contains interesting POIs
  • contains mining spots for Tritium
  • offers further advantages for explorers

Timeframe

The plan is to deploy the Fleet Carrier DSSA Aristarchos starting around mid-June (assuming a release of the update early to mid-June). To have a few weeks to scout the area the expedition will start on the 8th of May and hope to reach Xibalba itself mid to late May. It will make use of the Paradox Shortcut to cross the gap between the Perseus Arm and the Outer Arm (minimal jump range required with jumponium is 45.5 ly jump range) as charted by CMDR Allitnil.

Since the goal is to prospect the area around WIZZ PI-B D13-6 the expedition will want to cover as much ground as possible on the way to the Xibalba region themself, thus only containing a few waypoints. Using the crossing it should be around 29k ly to reach the region.

Should you already be out in that region or plan to leave for Xibalba early/later that is perfectly fine.

If you are interested in helping the DSSA out by finding a fitting location post here or reach out to me over on the FleetComm HQ discord server! Similarly, if you already have explored in the Xibalba region and know interesting systems I’d also be very interested in your suggestion!

Part Two - Travel & Deployment, June 9 - June 14 2020

The deployment of the Fleet Carrier will launch with the update going live on the server which is June 9 2020, in cooperation with The Aphelion Expedition of the DSSA Initiative. Refueling will happen within the bubble and the tritium we collect there will be enough to take us all the way to the destination system in the Xibalba region.
We will travel to the new waypoint each day. Currently its planned that the Fleet Carrier will travel between 12:00 and 16:00 Elite ingame time (UTC). So if you want to travel with the DSSA Aristarchos you will be able to explore around the waypoints between 16:00 and 12:00 of the next day. As long as you dock until that time you will always be able to catch a flight to the final destination in Xibalba.

Expedition & Travel Map of the DSSA Aristarchos. We will travel from one waypoint to the next within a few hours each day, resting to the next day. The other, smaller Carrier symbol is the (planned) location of the other DSSA Carrier in Xibalba, the Explorer's Bar 'n Grill located at Arm's End.

If there is enough interest we can halt the final deployment of the DSSA Aristarchos for a few weeks, giving all CMDRs on board the chance to scout the surrounding systems of Eocs Aihm XX-U d2-6 in Xibalba to find an awesome/fitting host system for the Fleet Carrier. We could then vote on which one to chose. A backup system that we can take either way has been found and scouted over the last few weeks.

While the travel and deployment phase will be over quickly, this offers the chance for willing explorers to take the DSSA Aristarchos as a quick and hussle free ferry to the Xibalba region. We will cross the abyss with ease with the 500 ly jump range the carriers offer. The region that is currently being prospected for a fitting host system for the carrier has a high star density (compared to other regions far out at the rim of the galaxy), so you will be able to travel to other POI or back to the bubble with even with a low- to mid-tier jump range (40 ly is recommended, 30 ly should be workable if need be though). Be aware that the DSSA Aristarchos will remain fixed at its deployment system, so you will have travel back on your own accord!

Naming, Ethos & Mission Patch

The DSSA Aristarchos is named after the famous greek astronomer Aristarchos of Samos (fl. 250 BC), who was one of the first proponents of the heliocentric world view. In the spirit of the DSSA network we want to offer a safe haven to all explorers or anyone out in the black in need of help. If you are in or around Xibalba, the DSSA Aristarchos will have all the services a FC has to offer. Repair, restock, ship or module transfer, redemption of codex entries and turning in your exploration data.

The DSSA Aristarchos is also a fitting waypoint and resting stop if you plan to travel further to the end of the Outer Arm, to reach the second DSSA Fleet Carrier stationed in the Xibalba region, the Explorer's Bar 'n Grill (Expedition Thread), located at Arm's End. Be aware though that you will need a ship with a good jump range (60+ ly) and plenty of jumponium to reach Arm's End safely. The DSSA Aristarchos will stay in a pretty dense area of stars, so you can at least reach this DSSA Carrier with any kind of jump range.

Update

The scouting phase is going ahead and I'm looking to reach the area at the end of the week. Scouting will continue for some weeks and everything found that is a likely candidate will be collected. We then chose a system once the DSSA Aristarchos reaches Xibalba, hopefully a few days after the FC-Update goes live. As always, if you want to join/help, or you have interest in the DSSA project in general feel also free to visit the FleetComm HQ discord server!

If you always wanted to go to Xibalba, but never done so, feel free to dock at the Carrier when it starts on the first day of the update going live in the bubble! We will take you near to Arm's End, within an area with enough stars so that you can plot your route freely, no matter your jump range.

The start might also tie into a bigger DSSA event that is yet to be announced.

DSSA Aristarchos Logo

I've also made a logo for the DSSA Aristarchos. As the name suggests, the Carrier is baptized after the famous greek astronomer, one of the first proponents of the heliocentric world view.

Update

I've updated the OP with some more informations regarding the deployment. Further informations will come when a yet to be announced DSSA event is posted in the future. The DSSA Aristarchos will launch under the umbrella of this event.

Scouting for a host system is happening as we speak. We've found a few fitting systems as of now, but the scouting will continue at least until the end of the week. The final destination will only be decided once the Fleet Carrier reaches the Xibalba region early to mid june.

Two of the possible host systems: One & Two

Update

Another update to the OP. The scouting phase is over for now and we've found a couple of candidates that would work for the DSSA deployment. Nothing is final yet and once the Carrier is on location there still remains the option to choose another candidate, in case some CMDRs want to scout further.

I've added the planned travel route for the FC with waypoints/POI. We will visit one POI each day (roughly 5k ly apart, on set time frames 12:00 - 16:00 UTC ingame time), giving you circa 20 hours between travel-times to explore the POI and/or surrounding systems, if you want to travel with us to the Xibalba region. The exact dates will be determined once the DSSA umbrella event is announced.

If you ever wanted a relaxing way to go to Xibalba, this is your chance!

Refueling in BD-22 3573 is well on its way, with many Aphelion Carriers currently being there.

I hope to make the first waypoint today, though I might make it only tomorrow, since the server problems did cost some hours all in all.

Thanks for all the help with refueling! We are now on our way. Due to the server problems we were delayed and the flight plan has been changed, shifting one day. We will now reach the host system by June 14!

Expedition Waypoint IV - Skull & Crossbones Nebula as seen from Haffner 18 LSS 27

Today went very smooth, reached the waypoint without any issues. Tomorrow we will cross the star-gap towards Xibalba! Thanks to some scouting efforts by CMDR Skytale already on-location we also located the first Tritium double hotspot in Xibalba, only 65 ly away from the deployment system.

The Final Waypoint - Deployment System (EDSM)

We have made it! The DSSA Aristarchos is in position and will serve as a haven for explorers for hopefully many years to come. We buy Tritium at 120k/t, so if you are in the area and would be so kind to mine and sell some to us, that would be greatly appreciated! Once we are pretty full on fuel the Tritium shall be used for expeditions to refill the FCs quickly.

If you need Tritium its best to contact me via reddit (/u/Holint_Casazr), Discord (Holint, on FleetComm HQ) or here (reddit would be best).

Congratulations! Been keeping an eye on your journey and am likely heading out that way (not for a while). Do you have a channel in the FC Owners Club?

I'm not on the FC Owners Club, but will look into joining the server; the usual communication currently goes via the FleetComm HQ DSSA-Channels.

See you in the black. o7

The DSSA Explorer's Bar and Grill arrived in orbit with DSSA Aristarchos at 00:15 GMT June 22nd. We will depart at 16:00 GMT June 23rd.

As a gesture of solidarity, several tons of rare goods were ceremoniously smashed against the front hull.

Wishing you all the best,
Commander Heavy Johnson and the crew of the DSSA Explorer's Bar and Grill
