Newcomer / Intro Overheat Question...

Hello

I have a Krait MK II with the highest rated fuel scoop I could place on the thing and every time I fuel scoop a star, my heat goes crazy. The scoop doesn't even scoop that much, maybe it will get up to around 30 or 40t of scooping (but usually just like 5 to 15ts) but quickly overheats. In order to not overheat, I need to stay in a certain area and pull away from the star A LOT to cool down and scooping takes forever! I can go from low 60's to "Warning" and smoke in no time. NO idea why :(

I also have a Diamondback Explorer with highest grade fuel scoop and when I scoop with that ship, I get like 150t scooping and heat hardly moves and scooping a full tank takes very little time.

I am wondering why the differences. I guess my Krait just runs hotter, and wondering if there's any Engineering that can be done to fix the fuel scoop heat issue with Krait? I do see Fuel Scoop Engineer but wondering if that will help with Heat or just Rate of Scooping? I don't want to make the overheating problem worse.

Thanks!

Some ships just run hotter. Apart from that, outfitting matters. Heat from scooping is not the only heat generated and heat adds up. Please post your builds.

That. Builds (coriolis or edsy) needed.

This is my Krait Mk.II - no scooping problems whatever up to max rate. Of course, she's no Dolphin or DBX, not even a Phantom. But I can keep her below 70%.

Ok straight away l went to the bottom of coriolis to the deployed retracted temp/power usage graph.
Deployed your 113.8% over the odds. In other words you're power plant isn't supplying enough power when your weps etc are deployed.
I reckon in your modules tab some are down powered by ships computer to allow your ship to run. This isn't good. Soon as you enter combat your ship will go belly up. Random modules will switch off.
Disastrous.
Answer.. reengineer your power plant to generate more power.
Should fix it all.
Your running way too hot because your not powered correctly.
Also you've no heatsink installed.. you won't need 2 missile defence thingys. Just one will do.
The weapons you've Installed use alot of power.
The shields do too.
Biweaves use alot less power. Or consider low draw.
Your sensors and life support are A rated use alot of power and are heavy.
Use D rated to save power and their alot lighter.
Finally your shield resistances don't need to be above 50% cos anythng after it is a waste. Diminishing returns.
A good build. I've. a FAS I'm building atm that's problematic cos I've opted for a low powered plant and it just doesn't have the juice I need to fire up deployed.
I've even D rated the fsd to save power it's a combat build so not interested in range.
Overall a good ship cmdr.

If your heat percentage while in supercruise is above 30 percent the ship is going to get warm scooping suns.
The higher percentage the worse it gets. Here is my Asp Explorer build with the primary goal to run as cool as
possible. In supercruise it is at 15 percent and with thermal vent beams can drop all the way to zero. It can fill
half the tank and never get above 65 percent heat. For your build note the engineering on the core modules
and the shields all designed to lower the heat.

Errmmm... @Dragsham : if you're talking about OP's Krait - where did you get the link? If you're talking about mine - no, she runs perfectly fine 😁.

Yes, if I deploy weapons, I would run at 113.6% - this is why the FSD Booster, Fuel Scoop and Vehicle Hangar (in this build - I swap out modules a lot) are priorized down so they automatically get powered off when I deploy my weapons. I don't need to throw SRVs at my opponent (the Pacs are doing a fine job by themselves) and if I ever need to run, 29 ly range is perfectly fine to get out of dodge.
Engineering my PP for higher output would be counter productive, as this would mean more heat produced per power generated (the "Efficiency" label is a bit misleading - the lower the value, the less heat is generated per power produced).
Point defence: I disagree, which is why I have two.
Heatsinks: I don't need them, as nothing on that ship generates a lot of heat. In this build, I don't use stealth, either. Speed and firepower.
Weapons: no, they don't. One third of what pulses would use, one fifth of what (unengineered) beams would use.
Shields: Well, as long as I have the power to use them, they're no problem.
Life support: A rated also gives me 25 minutes - time enough to kill the son of a mother who cracked my canopy and only then retreat to a station for repair.
Sensors: in anything but a combat build, I use D rated. But here, it lets me see them before they see me.
Resistances: they aren't - 31, 27 and 31%. Can't even scrape at 50% with only two boosters.

Ah ok I get that... I'll try this on my fas and fdl I have both with stink hot rails all short range.. heat defo an issue.
Nice build

Also, some ships - depending on loadout and engineering - will get hotter at the same height as others. Try moving slightly higher above the star.

I spy with my little eye a Krait with a 1A fuel scoop*... ;)

(*see other thread)

I can scoop at 878kg with my Krait Phantom and maintain that for quite a while, yes it eventually hits the red line if I stay but long before then I have scooped everything I need, sure it's a little cooler running than a Mk2, but engineering for cooler running makes a big difference.

Sounds like it, you can shove a 6A into that baby, do it and you won't need to stay near the star long enough to overheat!
I have a 6A Shield Generator in that slot and the other is a 64t Cargo Rack, which I am going to need, a lot, when I unlock this Engineer who wants 500ts of mining

The bigger your scoop, the faster it fills your tank. I have a 5A scoop on my Krait II, and it does hundreds of t/second. At the max rate of 711 t/s, yes, the Krait will overheat (in my configuration, anyway). So don't sit at the max-rate distance. If I back off, to around 300-400 t/s, I can sit there at 60-65% heat indefinintely.

I've got a 6A shield and a fighter bay in the other size 5 slot, which leaves me only 64 t of cargo space. If I need more space, I drag the Python out of storage.

IMO, either put a giant fuel scoop on a large ship, or no scoop at all and rely on short hops, or ship transfers or carriers for transporting it long-range. A tiny scoop on a larger ship just wastes time and space.

My newly-purchased Corvette has a 7A scoop, colloquially known as a "star eater". costs 91 milion credits without a discount, 1200 t/second scoop rate. Sure, it overheats like crazy if I get close enough to hit the max rate, but I don't really need to worry about overheating because it fills the tank so quick, you can be in and out of the corona in just a couple of seconds.

I run a 4a scoop on mine, A rate PP. Only get to 100% heat if I need half a tank or more (I hate brown dwarves so very much, lazy little blighters not making the effort to become actual stars).

That's at close to exclusion zone rates.

Yer not going to get a big scoop on it. I forget what's on it atm, but it's maxed.
On mine I can only get 167/s flow at 64% heat. If I get up to 70% the flow barely changes. That's playing the heat safe.
So skim the corolis till you get to a good flow and comfortable heat level..... Throttle back completely and sit until she's full. Takes about a minute to a minute and a half. Enjoy the view.
Now my krait phantom, Sheesh....... I can fill it up in close to 40 seconds from a near empty 32t tank.

She doesn't "want" 500t of mining - you just have to have mined 500t of stuff to get her invite. You can just mine any old rubbish and jettison the refined stuff from your cargo hold as you go until you have mined 500t.

All she "wants" is 10 t of Painite as a donation to unlock access to her.

It continues to get hotter because you are getting closer to the star. Instead, pick a heat figure, say 60%. When you reach this, just zero the throttle and you will continue to scoop at 60%. Otherwise you need to match the curvature of the star. Speed is irrelevant.

Heat is a function of heat generated (power used), the rate you can dump heat and heat from an external source like the sun. IIRC A grade power systems are the best at dumping heat and you can reduce heat generation by reducing your power usage e.g. turn off stuff are not using or configure your build for minimum power usage. Clearly the closer you are to the sun the the more heat received so once heat dumping and generated are optimised then you need to fly the ship right to not get too close. Not all builds can get the maximum out of a fuel scoop.

Rob

P.S. if your weapons are not deployed then they are not on so not generating heat.
P.P.S. as said above different ships with the same power usage and power system will run at different temperatures. (and don't ask why they just do :) )

Thanks! Mining is my next goal, when I get back from this 5000 LY trip for Palin, which I guess is actually 10,000 if you count the return. I heard some people say just get the 5000 LY's out mark and self-destruct to spawn back in the Bubble, but was wondering... if you do self-destruct, what happens to all the system data you've collected, does it go bye-bye on self-destruct? If not, then yeah, I am not flying 5000 LYs back! Ha! ;)

You lose it all obviously. Just jump back using fsd jumponium or the white dwarfs and neutron stars. Jump honk jump. Once you near the bubble switch to solo and go hand in data.
