Newcomer / Intro Overheat Question...

Thanks! Mining is my next goal, when I get back from this 5000 LY trip for Palin, which I guess is actually 10,000 if you count the return. I heard some people say just get the 5000 LY's out mark and self-destruct to spawn back in the Bubble, but was wondering... if you do self-destruct, what happens to all the system data you've collected, does it go bye-bye on self-destruct? If not, then yeah, I am not flying 5000 LYs back! Ha! ;)
Depending where you end up after your 5,000Ly there could be a relatively close station where you could sell your data and possibly park your ship and buy a cheap Suicidewinder to blow back to the bubble in or even a Fleet Carrier heading somewhere useful that you could hitch a lift on.

But I would recommend just flying off to one side enough to ensure your route back doesn't merge with the outward one and double up on you cartographic data haul.

I would not recommend White Dwarfs as they are reputed to be serious ship killers.

You lose it all obviously. Just jump back using fsd jumponium or the white dwarfs and neutron stars. Jump honk jump. Once you near the bubble switch to solo and go hand in data.
D'oh! Well then, I don't want to self destruct! I already have my journey planned, jumping to "Traikoa FL-P e5-4" via the Neutron Highway. Wish me luck, as I have never used a Neutron before... 🙄

True not all white dwarfs are safe.. but you can still jump from em. Enter plume and pop a sink. Doesn't always work.

Just keep in mind that you'll need to AFMU repair your FSD every 10 boosts or so. Preferrably before it fails (can happen at/below 80%) and dumps you into real space while you're inside a cone. That is usually not survivable.

Thanks! Right now. I am filling up on materials to repair my AFMU and I am going with 2 of them, as one can repair the other. I am a little unclear as to how much of the 4 repair materials I need, but just filling up until I am maxed out. I guess I can always drop down to some planet if and when I need more materials. Thanks!

Made well over 5000 Lys and was super easy! Never even HAD to use a Neutron star at all. I did use 2, just because I had never used them before but those FSD overcharges only gave me from my max of 52 Lys to around 200+. Not even worth damaging my FSD over. Just jumped, scooped, a few Browns here and there but never once got anywhere near empty or had to even use the two Repair units I brought. I parked on a planet and did repair the FSD from 97% back to 100%, just because, well I had never used the Auto Repair Units before... now to jump on back to the bubble and Palin. I was really stressing this 5000 Ly travel for Palin but wow, twas nuttin'! Hope I have the same luck on way back, picking a slightly altered route for more scan data bucks!

Now your a cmdr
Ha! Thanks. I might be after I gather all the Corrosive Cargo Rack materials, since that's the new task to open Palin with his Thargoid Senors. Back to the grind. It's fun though... when I am all done, I will truly feel "Elite"! I am approaching 1000 hrs in this game... the only other game, out of the hundreds I have (PC, XBOX, PS4, WII), that comes even close is Skyrim at 200 hours. Although... if you count Duke Nukem 3D, well I must have 10,000 hours into that from back in the day, and that's just the Level Builder! :)

Duke nukem was an amazing game at the time. Quake wasn't out yet as l recall. And running duke through demon on a Rockwell 33.6 was the order of the day. Brilliant game.
Back to elite. Yeah it's all about fun. Doing what you wanna do well.
I started by fully engineering a python that in turn unlocked the whole game.

I am going to see if I can attach my route from Sirius, out to a Black Hole and back, to help others making this trip. I assume, if you're at the point of needing these 5000 LYs, you're trying to unlock Palin. Here's the path I took (attached Excel file I made off the Neutron Route Planner). You DO NOT need to even USE the Neutrons to jump, just use them as Way-points, road markers. My DBX has a jump range of about 52/53 LYs and I already had about 500 LYs from Start. This path, there and back, has 99.9% scoopable stars. ON the way out, there were like 4 Browns but spaced out where it was not even an issue. No need for an Auto Maintenance Unit (don't use Neutrons! except as way points!) or extra fuel tank. Just have a ship with at least 52 LYs range and a fuel scoop for sure, a good one, and make sure you can land on a planet (which I'm sure everyone at this point can with Horizons). You're going to need to take some breaks. This path to and fro, worked perfectly for ME, your mileage may vary depending on range. There and back was about 130 jumps and took about 2 hours total. I hope this helps someone. Just jump, paste in next Neutron, jump to it, paste in next Neutron, jump to it, rinse and repeat. Make sure you have a 32t fuel tank fitted and plot route with filtering for scoopable stars only and make sure it's ticked for adding to route plot and set "Fastest Route".
