Overnight camping in deep space

Until recently, I made my way back to a space platform when I was done playing for the night. But now I'm a little further out and don't ant to head in at the end of play.

So I've just been driving away from the sun for a bit, exiting SC and setting speed to zero. Lights and shield go off and I hit silent running. It's worked for the past few nights but I'm wondering what the pros do. Is there a safer way? Playing solo for this exact reason.

I always try to land on a planet if i dont have the Carrier with me, you can get a decent camp fire going 😜

The only time there was ever an issue was if you logged-out in an asteroid field - there was a chance on restarting that you might spawn into a collision with an asteroid. They fixed that many, many updates ago.

I am quite happy to log off in space when out in the black, no need to land before logging-out.

Good to know, thanks. So when I log off is my ship still persistent in game? Could I experience an interdiction or be attacked in any way? Or does it just disappear until I relog?

Interesting! How does Elite decide your position in a system when you log back in? Planets/stars will have continued to orbit each other - if you drop out of SC and log out in some random spot that's on a planet's orbit line, is there a theoretical chance you could find yourself inside the planet when you log back in?

Not something that's ever been a problem for me, just curious how the game handles it.

If I logged out at a Thargoid base or an Guardian site with sentinels I'd be placed outside the perimeter when I logged back in.
Likely something similar happens with wandering planets etc.

Aha, so we suspect that if you would spawn inside a planet, Elite will just step in and place you in orbit or something - a safety feature :)

Might fire up my Sidewinder and see if I can test that...
As others have mentioned, you should be able to exit the game safely anywhere, apart from combat scenarios I suppose. I haven't heard of any incidents in years.

No need to even drop out of supercruise as your ship disappears when you log out and will be stationary when you log back in. I'd be wary of turning on Silent Running though! If by any chance you don't log out - maybe become distracted or just forget - your ship will explode after so much heat has built up! When on Distant Worlds 2 a few years ago, I was landed on a planet with other commanders. After many had left for the next waypoints there were just two of us left. The other commander was in his SRV and suddenly his ship started shaking violently before exploding - leaving him with just the SRV he was sitting in! He telepresenced into my ship for a while pondering his next move, and remembered he had left his ship Silent Running which had caused the explosion. Eventually ended the telepresence session and self-destructed.
One of my alts, Flossy3 (Fuel Rat) is still floating in the last system she carried out a rescue in..... quite some time ago! 😁

Hmm, I was unaware that the heat built up. Good to know, thanks!

It's all relative. You have a "frame of reference" in ED. So if you're in the "zone" of a RES your coordinates are relative to the RES, not the galaxy or system. 100m by X degrees from the center of whatever your main reference point is, is still the same when you log back in, even if the reference point moved.

If you go far enough back there was a chance of this problem occurring if you were parked in the path of anything that kept moving while your ship was out of the game, but even that remote chance got fixed years ago.

The primary detection method for our ships is their heat signature, silent running works by shutting down all the radiators on our ships so the heat has nowhere to go until either silent running is switched off, you trigger a heat sink, or the ship explodes.
How long all this takes from starting silent running until the alarms start enduring panic will depend on your ship, it’s build and where it is, a really cold running build parked in the ice cloud from an exploded core asteroid can last for ages some hot combat ship popping off plasmas and rail guns along with shield cell banks not so much.

Back when I started if I had to leave the game when not docked I would zoom out of the orbital plane then in normal space deploy turrets set to fire at will, nowadays I will pretty much leave anywhere that is unlikely to be too hazardous when I log back in and take time to figure out what’s what, so no overnight stays close to a hot vent in case I get cooked the next day before I remember where I parked.
