I'm so late to the party it ain't funny.
I've been flying VR in DCS exclusively for what must be years now, (ever since the HP Reverb V2 came out)
But because I like to use external tools in EDO, (TCE, ED Explor. Buddy, EDSM, EDMC, etc), I never bothered to move off the 2D screen.
A recent monitor change pushed me across that line and following some useful videos on YT concerning OVR Toolkit in particular ... I now may never go back to a pancake screen.
So, there are a number of STEAM application like Desktop+ (free), OVR Advanced (payware) and likely others out there that offer the ability to bring your desktop into VR. Some seem better than others!
I found OVR Toolkit to best option for me so I bought it on STEAM (~12 Euro / ~13 USD / ~11 GBP at time of post). Installation was easy and a little time later and I was up and running.
Once installed, it can be set to start with STEAM VR application or it can be started manually. That's what I use with my HP Reverb V2.
It's very plug and play esque in my experience. There is a tutorial greeting you upon first use and it's pretty straight forward.
I can now manipulate cropped desktop grabs into my VR view in the cockpit and even set them as 'fade when not in focus' or set a manual open/close key which does not interfere with the in-cockpit holoscreens we are all used to and love. Great for surfing the interwebs when on a long trip kinda thing also. Some folks watch movies even.
So on my exploration trip, I can pop up Exploration Buddy and EDMC and review my situation, plan my next jump and fly the experience I wished to have.
(which numpty here never considered possible and was seemingly too lazy to investigate regularly over the last while ... <shakes head>).
In the off chance, there's others similar to me, just a note to confirm that there is a way, it works well, doesn't kill performance (your milage may vary comments seems appropriate) and enhances your VR experience hugely.
