Paid content for which version?

The thought crossed my mind: if the upcoming paid content is able to be bought independently of Horizons, it will have to have features unrelated to those provided by Horizons.

Or the content will require Horizons.

Hmmmmmm.

Hmmmmmmm indeed.

They are a few (obvious) options:
1. Make Horizons a pre-requisite for any new DLC
2. Make the new DLC independent of Horizons
3. Give anyone who buys the new DLC horizons for free.
4. Summon Cthulhu from his eternal sleep in R'lyeh and release the new DLC while everyone is being eaten/sacrificed/going gibberingly insane and hope no-one notices.

DLC will probably require Horizons and they will keep selling at a discount along with ordering a commander pack.

Price of Horizons will probably never be free, but will be cheap enough for those that want to enjoy the content of the new DLC.

I guess it will be mandatory to have Horizons, and maybe they are going to re-launch the game as "Elite Dangerous: Gold" or something like that and it will have Horizons included. In the last Steam's sale, Horizons was really cheap, like 85% discount or something. That leaves me with little doubt that whatever the new paid content is, it is going to be mandatory to have horizons to use it.

I can only imagine it must be a headache to manage with features and items in base alone vs. base + horizons. like "if account doesn't have horizons, then don't show this item on menu, or don't show blue line approaching planet" coding for so many things.

I think Frontier should have any new DLC's require/include previous successive DLC's and offer a discounted tiered pricing for those who already have Horizons and so on. If an account misses one or more DLCs in the sequence then an appropriate tiered pricing can be offered. I've seen this done by some third party FSX addon vendors where there would be different price tiered installations for a customer's current installation type to bring it up to the latest featured version.

I think any new expansion bought should include all previous expansions, for no additional cost. That would be the easiest way to maintain the game only 2 versions to update. One version is base Elite Dangerous, and the other is Base game and all expansions. A lot cheaper to maintain 2 versions then 3, then 4 then 5 etc....

Of course I can hear some cry, it is not fair I paid for Horizons and now you give it away for free. Of course it isn't free they had to buy the latest expansion to get it, but you get the point some will moan and cry over it, if they go this route. I was in the alpha and have life time expansion pass. So to me it is free, but I think any expansion going forward should include all the previous ones in the price.

If it is space legs it will not require horizons.

Atmospheric landing it will.

If it is atmospheric they will probably lump in horizons for free.

If it is both space legs and atmospheric landings it doesn't really matter it will sell like hot cakes and anyone that was on the fence about elite dangerous will buy it.

Hopefully we find out monday.

My guess, is FD will stop selling Elite Dangerous by itself.
And will only sell Elite Dangerous + Horizons.
or just Horizons, at a discount.

Then the new DLC will either come alone, with Horizons, or with ED + Horizons. If it requires horizons, its probably best to include it with the next paid DLC.

They'll wrap Horizons into the base game to justify maintaining its price tag and sell it as a present for the 25th anniversary. Anyone who bought horizons some time period before the announcement get cosmetics as a "don't feel too ripped off" console present.
