Paid updates?

On the IGN thing at gamescom at the end david said "Paid updates over the time" "Like landing on planets its an option you don't have to take but you can take"

So Will I have to pay to land on planets etc!!!???

Such update as planetary landings is one of the future expansions of the game. It is paid unless you have bought a lifetime expansion pass.

If you don't have the lifetime expansion pass, then yes... you'll have to pay.

Damn... ninja'd again!

Landing on planets and other modules will be a DLC just like other modern games. Extending and enhancing the game experience will cost you.

Since your not paying a monthly rate for playing it's not a bad system.

They are not updates but expanions though and they bring in major new content.

Most games will charge for their expansion packs due to the amount of money to develop that part.

I mean landing on planets should be a thing for all players.

Isn't £35 - £50 enough?

Planetary landings were planned as an expansion for a long time. So these are planned to be added as the expansion some time later after the release. Unless you have a lifetime expansion pass or purchased this expansion you won't be able to land on the planets.

That depends on the scope of the expansion. They could probably have included planetary landing pads in the standard game if that's all it was going to be. The hints we hear suggest it's going to be a lot more involved and almost an entirely new game, especially when combined with the walking around expansion.

I was an early kickstarter backer and have the lifetime pass.If FD told me that I had to put more money in to get both first-person and planetside gameplay, I would probably do so, just to ensure it happens. That's the dream, isn't it? I mean, who wouldn't pay a whole bunch of money to play Elite:GTA (Or even MMOolite:GTA)?

I'm guessing Derek Smart alone would sink a small fortune into a playable version of such project.

or paid updates or monthly subscription or any other form of money injection, development will need funds and spending years on game post release require some serious funding.

so paid expansions (same as most games now are doing with DLC or season pass) is the best way, unless you can suggest much better financial solution.

those expansions will really be game changers, they will not just add some silly new assets to play with, but cardinally change our game, FPS, planetary landing, thargoids, all that will bring loads of new unique missions, game play mechanics, assets (like fps weapons, ground vehicles, settlements on planets, wild life hunting etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.), so if paying for some assets and maps in COD is ok why here we should take all for free and as granted?

anyway there are planned 3 expansions and probably they come out once every 1-2 years, so even if they cost 35 pounds they will cost you 1-2 pound per month saving, is that an amount that you consider too big for completely new experience?

I would hope the ultimate goal is to have a living, breathing Universe - sort of like the ultimate sandbox in a way. So if you want to spend the next 10 years on one planet building an empire, you can do that. Or if you want to explore the mysteries of the cosmos, you can do that too.

Its a completely optional content expansion. Being that you have full unlimited access to the game post launch, its pretty typical to have some kind of paid expansions later down the road. Not unreasonable at all.

Well look at it this way if you are in a subscription service like WoW or Eve etc., you will pay just under £100 per year, every year you play. This pays for future game development, server time, land rental etc. etc.

In WoW's case you will also pay for future expansions as well and they are often even more expensive than ED.

So as you asked the question, no £30-£50 is no where near enough.

Up until the 29th July this year you could buy the life time expansion service in addition to the game for a very modest amount. If you missed it or like me couldn't make your mind up, then you like me will have to pay for the expansions just as you do in other games.

If you take another example as others have mentioned many games offer future expansion of their games by introducing DLC packs which you pay extra for.

Then there are the Free to play games better known as the Free to pay, as unless you pay lots of cash through various little tricks you can only skill up enough to play well by buying in game currencies to skill faster. If you take an inordinate amount of time to do the same skill up within the game, and not pay any cash in, you will probably get so sick of having yourself blasted to kingdom come so often by the OP pay player you will get fed up and stop playing. Those games often end up costing players hundreds of £'s per year.

I think I covered most things here. If ED doesn't generate any future income with the game there will be no further development and eventually no online game to play with friends. Then future space sims will come along and overtake ED with content and presentation. DB wants to continue expanding this games capabilities well into the future and I think most of us want him to also. That takes investment.

The very early backers who pledged quite large sums to get ED up and running and those who took advantage of the LTI up until the 29th July were given the right to get all future expansions free, and rightly so. Those of us who didn't will pay for the EXP PACS and that for me at least seems a good idea also.

I'm seeing more than enough £35 - £50 of content in the current game and what we know is coming in the Gamma. Especially given what the alternatives are...

Planet landings are a long way off, I'm guessing. By the time it's released, I'll be happy (as "only" a Standard Beta owner) to pay for an expansion. I'll pay for anything, if it's good. I bought Rise of Flight back when the main game wasn't free, and I bought almost all the add-on aircraft models. You wouldn't believe what I've paid for in scenery and aircraft models for civilian flight simulators over the years. At least ED isn't presently going down the path of selling ships as DLC. I'd much rather pay for other game content.
