Painite hell!

So, tonight I decided to do the requirements for Selene Jean.
I completed the 500 ton of mining and then thought the 10 ton of painite would be a breeze.
I found a pristine reserves metallic rich ring with a painite hotspot and have spent three hours to not find a single fragment of painite.
I have tried mining random rocks and also prospected countless orange rocks and had no joy at all. Is there something I might be doing wrong or could this be bugged?

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have spent the evening trying both.

Thanks for the link CMDR Quantis Trap. I found a few of these videos regarding overlapping hotspots but wanted to figure out why I couldn’t find a single fragment in a single hotspot.

Prospect allllll the rocks, man.

Pretty sure you can still find percentages of painite in regular rocks that aren’t all glowy.

Hell, I’ve seen rocks glow bright because they were 50% indite. Talk about a letdown.

Will have another go tomorrow evening. I just find it strange that I didn’t find a single fragment after 3 hours. I went through 40+ prospect limpets scanning rocks as well as randomly mining. Was trying to figure out whether there was something I was doing wrong.

Metal rich rings are different from metallic rings. Make sure you know the differences. While metal rich rings have painite hot spots, painite don't appear in it at all. Go to a metallic ring instead.

I think you're doing something(s) wrong which is why it's not working. It is much harder to find painite without the overlapping hotspot thing but it shouldn't be that hard. If you think you're having a bad RNG day, check which server the game says you're on, get completely out of the game and try to land on a different server.

Weird.

OP, are you sure you're in a Painite hotspot?

My T10 used to be based in Wargis for mining Painite and you couldn't shoot a laser, there, without hitting a lump of Painite.

Bhotho system

Planet AB3, A ring.

Resource Extraction site High

Fly about 15k out from the center so pirates leave you alone.

Pristine reserves. Enjoy painite in 30 minutes or less.

I was painite mining last night..

There's no science behind it, but i found that there's a higher chance of painite (including being in an overlapping hotspot section) from faster spinning asteroids. Prefer the ones that are dramatically spinning compared to the rest. If you want use the glowing asteroids as waypoints.

Its kinda weird doing old school surface mining now considering the buff. Deep cores are so rare compared to the old deposits, and the old deposits so common that you're probably better off dropping the seismic charge launcher for another mining laser and getting more limpets. It seems 6 limpets will pick up in realtime the output of one class 2 surface laser.. so double that and use the abrasion blaster and subsurface when you get them might be min max for surface mining (sounds obvious when written out).

Just in case, the one i use is HIP 59425. Find the overlapping hotspot, look where the circles intersect and drop somewhere in there. It could be rng, or there could also be a difference in probabilities based on the thickness of the colored rings.. one run i did i didn't have to care about which asteroid i was shooting at.. every second one seemed to have painite in it. Havent been able to reproduce that run though so something to do :) One of people in r/eliteminers also did some testing based on distance from hotspot marker / center and the percentage of painite found, so that could be it too. Filled up 256 tonnes in about 3 hours... Then my crew took 17% bah :)

@Op, There was a guy on youtube, that explained the shaped of the rocks you should be looking for... down to earth astronomy or something, really good guide I thought. Could help. keep trying tho, I've some fun trying the mining thing.
