Painite Mining Questions?

No, I only send the prospector if the initial laser indicates the asteroid does contain panite. before I started doing that ,every asteroid I sent a prospector to had 0% panite.

I've briefly considered buying another Cutter/Corvette to see if it's worth trying to build an "all in one" mining ship but, TBH, I prefer to keep specific ships for specific roles so I probably won't bother.

I dunno if FDev deliberately planned it this way but it seems like laser-mining and DC mining are so disparate that trying to build a ship to do both means you're always going to do both things less efficiently.
I like it that way.

You might as well just build a custom ship for each type of mining. Painite and VO's are so profitable that you can make your money back really quickly.

FWIW I've set up a Python with 2 mining lasers, seismic launcher, abrasion blaster, sub-surface missile, prospector controller and 3 collector controllers allowing 8 collector limpets. It has 128 ton cargo and can mine anything quickly. Not the huge profit per run which bigger ships get, but a double-painite session fills it up in about 45 minutes.

The only downside is, it has no fuel scoop.

Uhuh.

You can certainly do laser-mining efficiently in a medium ship.
It just doesn't work very well the other way around.

On the one hand, I kind of like the idea of building some kind of "mining dreadnaught" that could do it all but, OTOH, I also like the idea of there being roles which are suited to specific ship-types.

If I did try to build an all-in-one mining ship, I think it'd probably have to be with a Corvette and I don't really like the idea of going mining in a 'vette so it's not something I'm in any rush to do.
And, besides, I can already do all the mining I want/need in a Python or T10 so spending a billion credits just for a different view out of the cockpit is a bit frivolous. :p
