Painting the Target (for ground targets.)

As a foot unit, being able to pull out a tool and shine it at say, a person that's supposed to be eliminated. This gives a vessel flying overhead something to lock onto, and is now able to target that specific individual for a short amount of time.

I was thinking of same thing. Maybe painting people would be too much, but the targets like skimmers that can't normally be locked on to would be fair.

a good idea, as long as the target painting is active / sustained (like a target painting laser) and not fire and forget (homing beacon).

I'd be ok with the homing beacon if it has to be placed by hand, is visible and can be removed if found.

I was thinking at first about the old army saying* and imagining somebody trying to sneak up to the target with a paintbrush and a can of reflective paint.

Well, targeting small objects on the ground was always delicate in ED. The bigger the ship, the harder to do.
I mean those size 8 sensors are utterly garbage

I am totally on board with

A) laser painting a target and having a flying Wingmate be able to lock seekers.

B) visual for dumbfires only being plausible at <600m

C) Carpet bombing being a solution to this.
