PAINTjobs - Procedurally Altered Intelligent Nano Technology

I've touted this idea here before, but it was a long while back...

Ret-conning the paintjobs as being "a layer of nano-machines for which we purchase the configuration program in order to change their pattern and colour", would be a good way of enabling us to change our ship's paintjobs whilst away from Outfitting.

We're just "loading the 'PAINT' - Procedurally Altered Intelligent Nano Technology - with one of our previously purchased programs", which is what changes the appearance from white to black to whatever.

The excuse/conceit of course is that the programs are jealously guarded by the manufacturers via unbreakable encryption, which is why we can't just write our own programs ...

This would also explain the wear-and-tear as bits of the nano-coating being worn off in supercruise, and definitely needs Outfitting to repair.

Pros:

Being able to change our paintjobs whilst we're far away from the nearest Outfitting.

The lore explanation above covers any/all percieved immershunz.

May result in even more paintjobs being sold by FDEV.

Cons:

???

Given that we can change our Cmdr's appearance anytime without the need to dock at a station, this would certainly make sense from a meta-game perspective. You would have the benefit of choosing the lighting yourself, docking bays are not that great in this regard.
