Palin 5k LY + fragments all in one day - if I knew then what I know now....

Just got done today entire menu of Palin access, unlock, and rank up to level 5. If I knew then what I know now....perhaps this will help the next guy -

1. Don't spend so much time dithering over the 'perfect' AspE exploration build - just go with largest FSD jump and toss everything else if the point is get there and suicide for instant return back

if purpose is to unlock Palin ASAP (and not actual exploration combined), then you definitely only want to build:
a) longest FSD jump distance - not a single exploration 'extra' --> no ADS, DSS, SRV hangar, etc. Just (1) heat sink and (1) AFMU just in case
b) jump - arrive - don't even bother with scanning star - just dip rescoop and jump again
c) took me ~1 min per jump, entire cycle of land, recharge, count down, and in-jump animation

2. If you use Colonia Highway route, don't land at the outposts. I screwed myself for the suicide trip back because initially my plan was land there, strip ship of valuable class 6A fuel scoop and engineered 5A max FSD, then exit outside, and suicide. Normally, if you take insurance suicide you end up at last station visited, so I planned to take the free sidewinder.

My plan was this would allow turning in all my exploration data as I did take an ADS this time and honked as I rescooped, and save my expensive fuel scoop + FSD. The base cost of the AspE I was willing to write off as cost of getting back instantly. But I was an idiot and did not plan ahead - not sure if Google search would have shown it but the outposts do not have outfitting nor shipyards.

So when I landed, I locked myself to that save point, and wasn't able to strip my ship off in order to do a suicide with restart at start system with sidewinder.

This was Hillary Station at first outpost ~2k LY out. So what I did was take off, go the remaining ~3k LY to achieve Palin 5k, then suicide in space to return 3/5 of the way back - to Hillary Station. Which left jumping back ~2k LY again. If I knew there was no outfitting or shipyard, I wouldn't land there and just skip the entire ADS part too - just go and jump over and over, get the 5k done, suicide, and come back.

3. After unlocking Palin, the hunt for UA fragments was very easy - if you use the ancient alien ship instance way. YMMV the hunt for USS way. But unless you have some huge moral issue with relogging, getting UA frags via alien ship crash is ~3min for all 25 frags (*with just 1 single relog). There's a thread on the Eng subforum if you want the coordinates and method details

4. I did not know Maia did not have a single shipyard anywhere, so did not plan ahead to get Palin ranked up + craft (3) DD5 upgrades.

I went out in AspE, got there, then found out no shipyard at Obsidian Orbital or the 2 large planetary surface bases. So no way to call my other two ships over via transfer. Knowing what I know now, I'd have stripped all 3 ships I planned to upgrade of their drives and put into storage, fly out with 1 ship that can install any of those 3 thruster class sizes, land at Palin, and then use the transfer module function to transfer all thrusters I planned to upgrade. Go play solitaire or whatever for 40-60 min, then do the upgrades once modules arrive.

Unfortunately, I did it the hard way and had to go back and forth couple times.

My luck did turn though and on 2 of my 3 DD5 upgrades, I rolled an awesome better than max multiplier. I got close to the max on the base roll, and then hit the secondary effect lotto that boosted the overall multiplier beyond the base max.

Now I'm randomly searching for more DD5 mats.

I think I unlocked Palin a couple months ago (spent a good month doing nothing but engineers). That said, I just pointed in one direction and got to 5004ly from start, and turned around.

I didn't do/know the suicide thing at the time, but then, you'll also lose all your exploration charts. So, I'm glad I didn't.

That, and the return trip to Maia from 5000ly out, you very likely are taking a different route back than you did out, so, more exploration data to sell (it was a few million, if memory serves, which goes a long way to unlocking the first few levels).

It's been so long, I can't remember the system I found the UAs in. I do know that I found them all in about 20 minutes when I started looking. Maybe the RNGods looked out for me that day. (Since it took me 5 days to get 20 Pharmaceutical Isolators)

As a side point, I'm glad the commodities are gone now. I'm kitting out a cutter and getting parts pre-engineered for a Corvette, if/when I ever get rank to get one.

I took a battle-fitted Anaconda (30 LY) all the way out to a point between the Lagoon Nebula and the Trifid Nebula. Should've taken a day, instead took over 2 weeks. Got probably a hundred or so stellar bodies with my name on them as a result, DSS got a workout. Didn't suicide back, took the two-day trip home, made 6-8 neutron jumps there and the same back. It helps if you follow your tracks back so you don't get side-tracked DSS'ing new systems.

I left a few systems untagged and bookmarked them for next time. They still haven't been claimed by anyone.

I had palin day recently as well and boy did it suck, especially cruising around for those pesky fragments
I was too curious to know how much money a 10k ly trip would make and i got about 2.2 mil wich was a bit of a disappointment but now i do have my name on 5 planets somewhere :p
The biggest mistake i made was thinking i could go through barnard's loop on the way back but the entire col 70 sector is behind a permit wall so if anything i would advise to stay away from barnard's loop:p
All in all i think i spent 9 hours unlocking and ranking palin and as nice bonus i got interdicted by thargoids on my way back from maia with my okay rolled grade 5 dirty courier :p

You should have gotten above 20+ mil for the 10k trip. I did 10.1k and got in between 20-23mil and I wasnt even trying. If I saw an Earthlike I grabbed that and jumped out. Also NS are good $. I think I headed in the direction of the Crab Nebula, but didnt make it there. I just headed back after the 5k was complete.

Thinking about doing this soon.
Do you need to go see Palin first and accept his mission to travel 5K .... or just set off and do a 5K trip and then go see him?

You don't need to see him first, and technically you don't even need to be introduced to him before you do the 5k trip. The 5k trip is a pre-condition that can be fulfilled either before or after introduction.

If you already have the 5k trip done, then the instant you gain intro to Palin via leveling up Marco Gwent to level 3 (bit over actually), then you'll see the checkbox that already shows fulfilled for 5k trip and you go right to the collect 25 frags to unlock him step. If you don't have the trip done, then you'll see the 5k trip condition which needs to be done before you can go on to collect fragments (technically I guess you could collect frags anytime too, but you'd have to hold onto them with the pesky corrosion effect)

yeh i figured it could've been better but i didnt bother with scanning any planets and i also figured that the barnard loop roundabout would probably have been mostly explored

MAKE SURE YOU GET THE INVITE FIRST BEFORE DOING THIS 5K RUN FOR HIM. Unless you are an explorer. There is a progress bar that keeps track of your distance from your starting point after the invite is sent. For me I had to do a little more than 5k for the progress bar to complete.

Tsk tsk. You could have had much more....

Hi all,

Just wondering how you guys managed to get access to Palin via Qwent if the Qwent access is blocked due to the Invite-not-dropping bug? Was that bug introduced only recently?

Cheers.

I unlocked Qwent long ago, and Palin invite had been hanging around a while. I took a Beluga and passenger out 5,200 Ly and back, dropped off my passenger, sold my data caches, sold my cartographic data, and made my way out toward Palin to collect my fragments from USS's, which took me about 20 maybe 30 minutes to collect all I needed.

Three, maybe four minutes later, I was making Grade 5 Dirty Drives and so ended my little venture.

Gewnt does drop eventually the bug isnt that it wont drop at all just that sometimes it takes longer than it should. I did the gwent palin dance maybe 3 weeks ago, it was in this build any how

Thanks for sharing. What do you think how long the trip will take if you do it the fastest way? I'd really like DD5 upgrades, but everytime i think about traveling 5k ly, I'm totally happy with my DD3 upgrades again...

If you have been to Sag A , then Palin is just a bump on the road... ;)
Regarding level 3 vs level 5 : You want to carefully check your level 3, I had an over the top roll on a 3 for my ASP at Felicity, so I will not bother going to Maia..
But if min/maxer , be my guest.
Buy the thrusters extra you want to upgrade, and have them sent.(you must be able to fit them , of course!)

Cheers Cmdr's
