Engineers Palin 5kLY Journey? What did I do wrong??? :)

So, I thought all I had to do was pick a point about 1000 ly out at a time and jump jump jump. All was fine but when I hit about 1300 LY from start I started running out of stars. I jumped around for about an hour and my distance from home never changed. I am to the point not that I am thinking of just self destructing and starting over. About 2 hours down the drain. I see Polaris, Banards Loop, Elephants trunk etc.....how in the world do you get there? I can only guess that the path I am going is somehow getting me closer to home. Right now I am at HD 108468. I feel like a fool :)

Not quite as easy I thought it would be.

What's your jump range? What ship are you using? Which way are you going? I don't know where exactly you are, as I don't have access to the starmap, but heading towards the core (Sag A*) or following the galactic arm should be workable for most ships. Just don't ascend/descend the plane, you won't get very far...

I'm in an asp with a 40ly jump range. After reading a few posts it sounds like I went up instead of out. I hate to lose all the scans I made. I'm wondering if I should head back down a little then go out....

More experienced players will give You some advices. But:
I have a feeling what happened. Galaxy map planes.
1. Select only scoopable stars KKBFOAM types when planning Your route.
2. Select fixed final destination. Then plote a route leg by leg. (I went to Thor's Eye.)
3. Distance issue: galaxy map planes! Rotate it often so You dont go too much above or bellow Your planned route.
This will save You time (my trip was also doubled in time and not the distance because of this!!!!)

If I would do it again and find myself in simmilar situation, I would start from the beggining to save the time and frustration.

just head down a little, and start moving in a diagonal direction away from Sol until the star density starts to pick up. 40LY is pretty darn good as far as jump range is concerned, you should have no issues getting 5k LY - if you go buckyball mode, you'll do it in 2 hrs with that ship easily.

I would suggest you manually work your way "down/up". Bookmark current system and make couple of bookmarks on your way back. This should help you to keep a heading and not run into circuit. I did this trip in my cobra mk3 which has much lower jump range, but i didn't go up/down too much. I had no issues.

Hope it helps

Thanks. I think that is what I will do tonight. Basically go down diagonally away from my start. Where on the galaxy map is the Y axis indicator? A number of posts suggest working to keep that near 0 as I move away from home.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
