Quick question, because he apparently won't take three as a first instalment, so I'm going to HIP Whatsit to get all 25, and get back to him as fast as I can, stopping only to repair the corrosive damage to my ship now and again. Does he really only sell 1 and 2 tonne corrosive resistant cargo bays?

He wants fragments not sensors.
Shoot the sensors, collect the fragments.

PS, a really speedy way to do this is to grab a single sensor or probe, then go to a Thargoid structure. Each (complete) active structure contains 12 links. Each link drops two fragments, each fragment counts for three materials, so that's a total of 72 fragments at a single structure. Easy peasy.
I think I've got the hang of it now. I tried to save time by buying 'Thargoid sensors' from a FC two jumps from Arque, and they were doing the corrosive thing and not accepted by Palin. I tried to fly them out to HIP thingy, to get more, and got hyperdicted by three Thargoids, and killed when I tried to scan their wakes. But it took care of the sensors!
At HIP, with a bit of reloading, I've finally got 25 fragments in materials, and.. ah hell, might as well get 25 more for Chloe, on the off chance I ever go back to Maia.

I got all mine from killing Scouts while getting my head round the basics of AX combat.
Filled all my Thargoid Mats bins, gave Chloe and Palin the bits the wanted and never used any of the other stuff ever again

I'm at the point now where I could kit a ship out for AX combat, but it's not a fight I'm looking for. Maybe after the next goldrush manifests and dies down.
Yep, HIP 17403 a 4 a was where I got mine, fairly easily by reloading. Only annoying thing was that the cannisters tended to spawn and roll away out of sensor range on the steep incline. And often when they were gone, they were gone. Not annoying enough for me to try to figure out if they spawned in the same spots, and I could position my SRV to catch one if I opened the scoop quick enough, though.There are several Tharg spots where you can farm them easily in only one go (mine was a crashed Tharg ship),couple of minutes work,shoot the Sensors collect the Fragments.
You got bad luck then,I was luckier no need to relog they all gave away the content asap.
