Panther Clipper - What Are You Expecting?

A 1,200+ ton cargo hauler?

A SLF Carrier with multiple launch capability?

It's supposed to be a huge cargo carrier, or the Type 9 Heavy's big brother, but what are you expecting for FSD, cargo capacity, utility slots, hard points, etc.

PS. There's the Puma Clipper as well. Should that be brought back?

2500 tons!

Then, when the BIG carrier type ships come out... Throw away all the PvP junk, and ship bays, and all those nonsense 'luxury' boosting compartments, and we got ourselves:

25,000 ton cargo hauler!

My Panther wish list is:
Heavy armor, medium offense, multi SLF, type 9 payload, modest FSD range.

My realistic (albeit cynical) expectations:
A different skinned type 9 that is basically the shape of a mail slot.

Some changes need to happen for the ships to get any bigger. External docking for large class and the possible future of a Big and Tall Class™ at existing stations. Indra is a nice model for that future, otherwise we are hampered by a mail slot.

Well its been a long time coming.. so i susspect there are perhaps mechanics that need to be put in to make the panther the ship is is suposed to be.

I was hoping for a ship with 1000 tone cargo possibly and 2 huge ans 2 medium hardpoints. 6 utilities and a ship launched fighter bay. Slow amd slugish like a t9 and a fully laden jumprange simalar to a t9 also. Thick hull and mediocre shields.

But who knows.. i like suprises so im redy for it to be a t9 pluss or a mega trader that needs an external dock or planetery landing pad.

I know in ffe it was the ultimate ship and that cant be the case in ED as balance is more nessasery and god ships are boring. I think many people will be disapointed buy it as they remember it as this ultimate ship it cannot be in this game.
That large plasma thogh.. ohhh the power!

I hope for a ship too big for the docking slot with a dedicated launch bay for transport shuttles.
Transport shuttles would be akin to SFLs, no hyperdrive, but relatively large passenger/cargo bay for loading unloading at the station.

I'm guessing it'll be somewhere between 1000 and 1200 tons.

The panther was never a 2400 ton ship in spite what sites like alioth.net might suggest. The reason being that in the older games everything you fitted to the ship, including the engines was counted towards the cargo limit and the ship had an 600 ton engine so even if you ran it completely naked you couldn't get more than 1400 tons on board. Add a few shields, weapons and such and the amount of cargo space available went down dramatically.

Handling wise I think it'll be slightly better than the original but still pretty bad. It'll make the type 9 look like an SLF

I'm hoping it's be better than the original because that ship was so sluggish it was possible to get stuck on a high G world unable to take off. Your engines would be screaming but you weren't going anywhere.

I loved the Panther Clipper in Frontier Elite II.
The reason for that was obvious: It was a flying fortress.
You could outfit the monster in such a way that it became virtually invincible.
I also loved the way it looked with its four huge movable thrusters.

Of course the Panther cannot be an invincible ship for Elite Dangerous.
There needs to be a balance.

It should be a big ship that adds something new to the game.
I am thinking about a cool new method for docking. Some kind of external docking system.
I think it could be a 1000 tonne cargo vessel (with appropriate shielding installed)

I think a ship of that size should have to rely mostly on turrets. It should have a good number of well placed hard points.
It might have a huge gimballed or fixed weapon to bring to bear agains large ships, but it should certainly be less maneuverable than the other large vessels in the game.

I also think it needs a shuttle bay to enable the cmdr to dock with stations that cannot facilitate the Panther itself.
I think this would add some cool new gameplay mechanics.
The cmdr might deliver passengers in the shuttle, or pay off some fines, take on some missions etc.
I feel that shuttles in general would add a lot to big ship gameplay.

LOL that happened to me too.
I was trapped. and had to load an older save file.

Isn't the upcoming type 10 supposed to be this ship?

I doubt very much DB had any idea the T-10 would be in game when he talked about the Panther Clipper in 2014. The T-10 does seem to be another heavy freighter, the Panther has been confirmed to be a completely separate ship, I'd also expect it to outclass all the other large freighters in game. We'll find out someday.

What my hopes for with the Panther Clipper is like in the older Elite game if my memory serves me right, is you must have a crew to fly this beast. Either players multicrew or NPC crew, now that would make this ship something special. :D

I would love that. But, many other ships required a crew. The Anaconda needed multiple crew members. And if I remember correctly even the ASP needed a co pilot.
So don't hold your breath for it .. :p

During FX had a chat about Panther. Short version is - they haven't given up on it, but they don't see gameplay for it at the moment. Consider T-9 already hauls way less that it size allows it to.

Considering that adding new ships is very expensive to devs, adding Panther without any solid role would be meh. We already struggled with all passenger ships without passenger, etc.

Seems a bit strange, do you have a source for this? No game play for a large cargo ship? That doesn't make any sense.

A massive carrier that can't fit on even Large Pads; the only way to transfer cargo is through the use of "Cargo Runners" (SLF-like ships), or through, example, Lakon ships "docking" against the Panther and transferring cargo to it.

I'd love it to be so big, it doesn't fit in the slot, and only can dock really at the capital ship docks thingies. So, it should include a hauler/shuttle for offloading -- optionally flown by NPCs. If the cargo hold is really large, possibly two.

Gameplay? Oh, i know --- tie it with an overhaul of the commodity market, so that bulk goods hauling start making sense, rather than only high value items. Use it to ship fruits and veg in bulk, water to dry systems, hydrogen to populated systems with no scoopable stars.

Considering the Trading nerf, a 1000+ as standard freighter, with class 8 shields and a few class 3 turrets, is EXACTLY what the game needs.

Otherwise everyone is rendered to servitude in medium size ships, running missions to satiate all the Engineers.

Remember that poster in Frontier Elite with all the ships on it?

After so many years gone by, I'm beginning to wonder why the hell they ALL aren't in the game already, and find comments like "not given up on it" quite patronising indeed.

ALSO, I'M EXPECTING IT TO BE AVAILABLE IN 2.4.
