Papua New Guinea Pack

Papua New Guinea is part of Australia, but we have a cassowary that is close to the edge of Papua New Guinea so here is my list of eight different species and several terrarium exhibit animals. This pack may have more terrarium animals for players to build their reptile house.

1. Long-beaked echidna
2. Tree kangaroo
3. New Guinea singing dog
4. Victoria crowned pigeon
5. Northern New guinea tree frog
6. Mountain cuscus
7. New Guinea crocodile
8. New Guinea snake-necked turtle

Err...Papua New Guinea is not part of Australia, it's a separate country.

I like most of your animal ideas, though. I'd skip the singing dog (too close to the dingo, IMO), but I would love the echidna, tree kangaroo, and crowned pigeon especially.

I had the same conversation here weeks ago.

Some people classify the continent of australia as (papua new guinea, new zealand, and australia/tasmania). Some people classify the continent of Australia as only the country of Australia (Both are troubling models since they leave several countries in the south pacific without a continent to belong to). And then some people recognize Oceania as a continent, while others only think of it as a "region". It depends what part of the world you are from. And how many continents they recognize there. There is no right or wrong answer, just several answers. Also continents can refer to the geopolitically recognized areas or tectonic plates (geographical regions)

I forgot to check the map that it wasn't part of Australia.

Probably best represented as just the New Guinea pack, as the island is split into two separate countries (one of which is Papua New Guinea) and animals do not follow geopolitical boundaries.

I would absolutely support this pack, without the New Guinea singing dog. No more domestic animals! Also they look identical to the dingo.

1. Tree Kangaroo (Goodfellow's or Matchsie's)
2. Common Spotted Cuscus. Way cuter than the mountain cuscus IMO. And while still incredibly rare in captivity at least has been documented.
3. New Guinea Short-beaked Echidna. No long-beaked echidna in captivity outside Oceania; I am unsure about within Oceania.
4. Pig-nosed Turtle. One of my personal favorites. They have flippers! But New Guinea Snake-necked Turtle would be fine.
5. Victoria Crowned Pigeon. We need more birds. Especially a small non-aggressive species that would be perfect for mixed-species exhibits.
6. Crocodile Monitor. Large, aggressive, arboreal monitor lizard. Far more visually unique than the New Guinea crocodile.
7. Green Tree Python (Exhibit)
8. Blue Tree Monitor. Another one of my personal favorites. Although Prehensile-tailed Skink would be another popular choice. (Exhibit)

I think Madagascar, New Zealand, a collective Polynesian island, and Aleutian island pack would also be great. Basically I want all the animals ;-)

I have quite literally never heard anyone refer to New Guinea and New Zealand as part of Australia, whether they're discussing the continent or not. "Australasia" or "Oceania" are usually what people refer to for the broader region, "Australia" is just Australia, as a country and as a continent.

I don't know what kind of foliage New Guinea does have, but there is so many undiscovered species of plants in that continent.

This thread along with the Madagascar pack thread and the New Zealand pack gives me an idea: what about an Islands of the World animal pack? 7 habitat species across many different islands? We'd get truly exotic species, as most are not found anywhere else:

  1. Fossa
  2. Tree kangaroo
  3. Kiwi
  4. Tasmanian devil (although Tasmania is part of Australia, I consider it an island)
  5. Coquerel's sifaka
  6. Long-beaked echidna
  7. ?
  8. ?

I can't think of anything else. I know that there are a ton of choices, I just don't feel like looking

There's like almost 200 countries not everyone thinks the same thing. Look it up.
It's like the first paragraph

New Zealand being part of Australia, continent or otherwise, is wrong of course, but I myself will often refer to New Guinea as "part of Australia" when discussing it in a non-political fashion. The strait between mainland Australia and New Guinea is shallower than that between the mainland and Tasmania, so geologically (as well as biologically) speaking the island is very much a part of the Australia as a continent. It's the same reason people often include New Guinean tree kangaroos in Australia pack ideas. There are other technical terms for the continent to avoid confusion with the country (as discussed in the linked wikipedia page), but I find I generally have to do more explaining if I use any of those terms than if I just clarify that I mean "Australia" in a continental context (except "Australo-Papua", which is fairly self-explanatory, and "Sahul" is beginning to become widespread in scientific literature).

Regardless, the OP was talking in terms of countries, not continents, and Papua New Guinea hasn't been a part of Australia since its independence in 1975.

For a New Guinea Animal Pack I would go with:
  1. Western Long-beaked Echidna
  2. Ground Cuscus
  3. Goodfellow's or Matchie's Tree Kangaroo
  4. Victoria Crowned Pigeon
  5. New Guinea Crocodile
  6. Pig-nosed Turtle
  7. Crocodile Monitor
  8. Green Tree Python [E]

My suggestion would be the bennets wallaby or the hawaiian goose.
Other options from madagascar that would be cool are the greater dwarf lemure or the fanaloka.
A really wild and fun pick could be the icelandic horse, but thats just a personal preference.
My favourite icelandic pick would the Rock ptarmigan though, a grouse that lives in norhtamerica, norteurope, iceland and in the alps.

New Zealand still isn't on there, and I don't care how many countries there are or who thinks what, because that isn't relevant.

Right. New Zealand is part of Australasia.

It absolutely does matter how many countries there are. And what they think is relevant. You don't think it's relevant that other countries accept different continent models? You sound like you're having a tantrum lmao.

For the record no one on earth is saying "I wonder what New Zealanders think" about any topic. Not even Niue. It's why you keep getting left off the maps.

Love Taika and Jacinda. You're obviously not from their part of the islands. 👍

Could we not bash someones nationality pls? Thank you and now tell me a cool animal from neuginea or another island

The irony of claiming someone is throwing a tantrum and then resorting to ad hominem is lost on you I see. Attacking New Zealanders does nothing to help your argument. As I've said before I'm completely fine with people following different continent models, but this is way out of line and not conductive to discussion at all.

To get things back on topic, here are some cool Papuan animals that haven't been suggested yet but could also fit into a New Guinea Pack.

White-striped Dorcopsis - Dorcopsis are some of the weirdest looking macropods, and they actually resemble some of the earliest fossil macropodids we know of. They're now only found in New Guinea and several neighbouring islands, and currently span 6 species. The White-striped Dorcopsis is the one that usually jumps to mind for me in terms of zoos although I know several other species are kept in captivity as well.

Agile Wallaby - For something larger and a little less odd, there's the Agile Wallaby. Also widespread across northern Australia, it's the only member of the "typical kangaroos and wallabies" (former Macropus genus) to extend into New Guinea, inhabiting the Trans-Fly savannas and woodlands in the island's south (which are an ecosystem much more reminiscent of the drier mainland than the rest of New Guinea).

Frilled Lizard - For another species more typical of northern Australia but also occurring in the Trans-Fly, there's the Frilled Lizard. A New Guinea pack could be another way of sneaking it in, although I imagine it may be in better taste to include a more iconically New Guinean animal as the single exhibit species.

Amboina Sailfin Lizard - Reaching over a metre in length, this is the largest species of agamid in the world and would be a really unique inclusion as either a habitat or exhibit animal (or both?). Just look at them.

Northern Cassowary - While we've already gotten a species of cassowary in the game, New Guinea has all three of them so what's the harm of adding another? Both the Dwarf Cassowary and Northern Cassowary are quite different visually from the Southern Cassowary in their own unique ways, but I've gone with the northern here just because they can be so goddamn weird looking.

I love this genus of lizards, thank you hes just such an awesome boy.
Im not sure if these were diffrent subspecies or something, but as an agamid it would make sense for them to be able to change color depending on their body temperature, similar do bearded dragons for example. If yes awesome that so cool and beautifull and if not heck yeah black lizards
