Newcomer / Intro Partial Engineering

If I remote engineer (or at a engineer's base) a module to say G5 but it only partially completes before I run out of a material can I come back to it and carry on from where I left off. I guess what I am asking is if you do 8 rolls but its not enough can you go and get the missing material and then carry on from G5 8 rolls to say 12 to complete the mod?

Pretty much. I was in colonia, did a level 1-3 FSD. Not enough mats to start level 4.
Ground out the mats in another system, docked at Jamieson Memorial and accidentally upgraded lvl 4. Went to grind mats for lvl 5 then took em to the engineer..... HE WOULDN'T TOUCH ME. Something was wrong with not enough reputation, which was absolute nonsense. Level 4 was 100% complete!
I don't really want to try and figure it out anymore. I would eventually end up back in the bubble and finish it off with my other engineer (and did) with no problems.

Personally, if I had to do it over, I'd grind out mats for lvl 1-3..... then go out and grind mats for lvl 4-5 and make the effort to go back to the engineer no matter how far away.
After all, all that effort, grinding away, a lil more effort to get to the engineer is pretty minimal in comparison.

You did levels 1 - 3 at Colonia, then did level 4 at Shin Dez - then went back to Colonia to try and do level 5? You wouldn't have level 5 access in Colonia since you've only done levels 1 to 3 there. Engineer rep doesn't decay. Or at least, I should say that in my experience it's never happened to me...

OP - Yes, you can use any engineer (that you have access to and rep with) to do mods to a module. I would caution against completing all level 5 mods though, the final three or four 'rolls' provide little improvement with the exception of thruster mods if you are looking for truly maximum speeds. Even FSD range increase mods often only get you a fraction of a light year for the final two or three 'rolls'. Of course, if you're a completionist... :)

IF you pin a blue print, you can upgrade it from any station that has the option but only to the point which you have earned status with the engineer. To increase engineer status and or to add experimentals you have to be there.

Ain't that the dern truth!
When I completed lvl5 FSD, I WAS sorely disappointed with the small gain. If (big if) I recall it was something like 2-3lyrs. However since I like to explore, I'll take it.
If you're hauling goods or blowing stuff up around the populated areas, I'd stick with lvl 4. Grinding away all those mats for lvl 5 just ain't worth the small gain.

And is that carry on from anywhere not just the place you did the original mod (remote or at a base)?
As long as you have pinned the blueprint and have the engineer unlocked fully you can do it at any remote engineering station, I was doing this just the other day when I was at a station I haven't visited in a while and checked over a couple of ships I had parked there.
