Hardware & Technical Parts required

I have been planning to build a PC for playing ED on for a while now, trying to leave it as long as possible before buying. The original rough spec was going to be a 4ghz quad core i7 with 16gb of RAM, decent SLI all wrapped up in a Silverstone FT02 case.

Recently however my workplace started on a company wide machine refresh and gave me the option of buying my desktop for £40. For that princely sum I got a Quad core Xeon 2.8ghz with 24gb ram, ATi FireGL card and a 19" monitor. No HDD.

First thing I did was get a 240gb Samsung 840 EVO and add a 300N wireless card I had spare.

The weak point is the gfx card (it has 256mb of ram only) and the BTX PSU. The interior of the case is nice with good spacing around the various areas and ducted airflow keeping things cool and quiet. The motherboard has two 16x PCI-E slots, two 8x PCI-E slots and 2 regular PCI slots. The PCI-E revision is 2.1.

Now I need to upgrade the GFX card but the PSU will keel over on anything but the weakest of GFX cards. Now its been a long time since I looked at cards and PSU since I buy laptops which are convenient for when I am away from home for work etc.

So I need two recommendations and possible third: a btx compatible PSU that can two GFX cards. I have seen a triple monitor stand that bolts onto a desk that holds up to 27" monitors, so the cards need to push pixels to three 1920x1080 monitors though in the first instance I will be running the single monitor that came with it. The possible third is a nice case that can take a btx board. I desperately wanted a FT02 but it doest list BTX as being compatible.

What are the ED players recommendations?
 
If you could provide the CPU model it would allow for a more definitive answer, the last thing you want is to be bottlenecked by it.
Any current PSU with its own 4 pin 12V motherboard connector will be fine (at a push one could always use molex -> 4 pin).
For a GPU I would personally go for a GTX 970, superb performance at a low power draw, great for SLI - http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/GTX_970_SC_ACX_Cooler/1.html
A 650W - 750W PSU, such as XFX 650W would be perfectly adequate.

It's really about how much you have to spend. Though a PSU is probably going to have to be had at the same time. As the supplier I suggest.

I will suggest you try to get the same manufacturer for your GPU as you have for the MB

My card, for example, is in the section 7 places down. My CPU is a bit slower than yours and I can play with a few delays in hyperspace.

It's really about how much you have to spend. Though a PSU is probably going to have to be had at the same time. As the supplier I suggest.

I will suggest you try to get the same manufacturer for your GPU as you have for the MB

My card, for example, is in the section 7 places down. My CPU is a bit slower than yours and I can play with a few delays in hyperspace.

I was looking at a fully modular power supply. The Corsair 760W AX760 is platinum rated and a little over £100. Considering my budget for a 750W was £100 (this was created when ED was announced:) I am not doing too badly.

The motherboard is a Dell so I doubt I will be getting a GFX card from them.

The processor and ram are faster than that of my laptop which I have been playing with up until now (via WEI) and it was fairly smooth with the graphics turned down a couple of notches. Looking at Task manager after playing ED the CPU's were only over 50% for short spikes so I am guess that a 2.8ghz xeon will out perform a 1.6ghz i7. Even if in the future it needs to be upgraded I can take the GFX, PSU and network card out into the replacement.

For £40 I'd say you're getting yourself a bargain, I'm assuming that's ECC RAM? As an upgrade path you could always get an 1150 mobo + Xeon E3-1240v3 (or similar if you wanted to reuse the RAM) or failing that replace the RAM and go for a conventional i5/i7.

I can only repeat, got to a reliable vendor and ask them. Pointless buying an expensive card and sinking with an inadequate, (also expensive) PSU.

Too late. Already ordered the PSU. If it doesn't fit the Xeon then I will just replace the non modular one in the HTPC. :)

I will check out Novatech for when I look at GFX cards in depth.

They all got snapped up pretty quickly as you can imagine.

I believe it is EEC ram but CPU Z only says it is DDR3.
 
Okay. The Corsair power supply arrived a couple of days ago. I had to dismantle every part of the case to get everything out, even buying a new longer screw driver as 3 screws couldn't be reached do to parts of the case being in the way.

The Corsair PSU is smaller than the Dell one, which is 525W. Unfortunately the sticker that said this information was on the wrong side of the PSU and was not visible until removed. Only two of the four screws align between the case holes and the PSU.

The Dell cables (SATA0, SATA1, SATA power, and CPU12V) were routed behind the motherboard and were cable tied in. They are all of a ribbon style (ie flat and not bunched) and so run behind the board easily. The Corsair cables aren't and are shrouded. This makes the CPU power cable problematic as that prevents the board being screwed in that corner with the 3 screws. But that's not the worse bit.

The CPU plug and the onboard connector are different between the two supplies and I only found this out after everything had been put back in place. I eyeballed the connectors and assumed (naturally) that the 8 pin CPU connector on the Dell would be the same for the split 2x4 CPU connector on the Corsair (which has CPU/CPU stencilled on the outside).

Using the PSU recommendation from the Corsair website suggests I should of gone for the HX and not the AX. I will email them and maybe get one from Amazon as they have HX750 for £109 - same as what I paid for the AX! I will also email Corsair and see if they can do anything about the necessary cable.
 
I was sat with my dog and browsing with my tablet at the beginning of the week when I read a post on stating that D pins fit the square holes but not vice versa.

So I tried fitting it again but it wouldn't go in, flexing of the board and the awkward location in the case (between CPU HS, edge of case and fan housing). I then removed the fan housing so I could give the board support. It was very stiff going in and I am still not happy about the board being bent the way it is.

I haven't actually turned it on yet as I still need to get everything else fitted. I would of done it last night but I spent the evening D&V. Today I have spent in bed recovering. If I feel better tomorrow I will look to turn it on then.

Update: it works and I took the opportunity to do some cable rerouting. Now to buy a graphics card or two.
