Newcomer / Intro Passenger Cabins Tips?

I'm a brand new guy, for the most part, and I was wondering something.
I saw there are Passenger Cabins and passengers you can take places, so I'm expecting this is kind of like doing a data transfer mission wherein you take passengers from point A to Point B.

I'm wondering if you need specific types of ships in order to get Passenger Cabins or if any ship with cargo space can use them?
And are there any recommendations in regards to running passengers...like should you avoid it if you're new to the game or is it an easy way to make money without having to fight?

Meow meow meow? :O

I think that smallest passenger cabin is class 3, so almost any ship can have them. Some ships (like passenger liners) can have all kinds of First class and VIP cabins, while other can only fit Economy and business class.
As for the rest, there are different kinds of passenger missions. There are simple deliveries A->B, there are sight-seeing cruises and there are long range exploration trips some passengers want to experience. For those kinds you'll need a ship with decent jump range, otherwise it would be madness.
But the short ones? Basically any ship can do. :)

I would definitely recommend reading the mission description very carefully, before you accept, though. Some passengers don't want to be scanned by cops, some are downright wanted or there are bounty hunters sent after them. Some passengers don't like danger - receiving damage to your ship can lead to them leaving, not paying,etc... Some passengers are demanding. They will force you to deviate from your route to buy them a bottle of booze. If you refuse, they get angry, leaving, not paying, etc... :D

It's fun. :p

edit: One last thing - after the last update, some passenger mission are kind of bugged - Mission will disappear and passengers will get stuck on your ship. Maybe if you are willing to, I'd wait a couple of days till Fdev come out with a patch.

Smallest is a 2E Economy Passenger Cabin, so any ship can fit a cabin, but the smallest Business class cabin is 3D and the smallest First is 4C - the number represents the size and the letter the 'quality'.

You can check and play with ship builds at https://coriolis.edcd.io (although the passenger cabins under 'Optional Internal' don't seem to be in alphabetical order).
Alternative site is http://www.edshipyard.com

A bit addendum to what Chris Simon wrote.

You can install passenger cabin in a ship that has cargo space. Remove cargo racks and install passenger cabin in that place and you're fit. Note that not every station can have passenger cabins available in outfitting menu. For easy purchase consider visiting https://eddb.io/ (once there click Stations button and then search in field "Station sells modules" passenger. All you need to fill is this and "reference system" which is the name of a system you are currently in. The results will tell you where is the nearest system which has proper outfitting.

Cabins come in 3 flavors. Economy, Business and Luxury. AFAIK Luxury ones can be fitted in top line ships. Anyway, the easiest is to start with Eco or Bussines or to mix them if you have space. Lakon T-6 would suit fine, but smaller ships are also available. Didn't tried with Adder but I currently have passenger fitted Diamondback Explorer. 16 Eco capable.

Missions themselves are two types:
- X is seeking transport
- X is seeking a sightseeing adventure

While 2nd type are far better paying, I'd focus on pure transport ones. Those are workers, refugees or similar persons that want simple transfer from A to B. Paid upon delivery. Sometimes interdictors will be sent after you (stated in mission desc), sometimes passenger change destination mid flight (mission critical message) - I see them highly desirable as they pay extra for little extra effort.

Sightseeing adventures are bit more tricky. They require you to take passengers to the specific location (small ones require 1, regular ones 3) which may be as far as 300 LY away. Usually it's something like this: Sys A (12 LY); Sys B (142 LY) and Sys C (248 LY). Paid upon return. This means going there AND back. And mind that all 3 destinations may be placed directly opposite towards themselves so expect routes: start to A, back to start then to B, then to start and to C and back. So overall distance covered may be much greater than farther destination.

And most important part - read really carefully passenger description. For starters traits as:
- passenger may be wanted in some systems
- demanding
- does not like danger
- secretive
are a sign of trouble.

Wanted means illicit cargo. Illicit cargo = fine when scanned by security (or outright shot down). Illicit cargo = problems with landing on stations (avoiding scans). Demanding means that passenger can ask you to do extra things. Visit more systems, get specific cargo (illegal as well). Some does not like being scanned and/or being shoot at (side effect of being scanned while carrying illicit cargo). Failing at fulfilling demands lead to satisfaction drop.

You start with "happy" passenger. 1st fail is drop to "content". 2nd fail is drop to "unhappy". 3rd fail is passenger saying bye bye - abandons you, mission failed. No payment. Plus all bad karma you may acquired en route (like fines or even bounties).

So, general tip: if you don't feel adventurous, avoid old men with young farmboys and two droids seeking transport to Alderaan and no question asked. Refugees seeking transport are nice customers. Corporate employees are nice folks too. Occasionally you can take sightseeing trip, but if it's one stop and relatively close.

How do you evade scans?
I've been scanned like 3 times leaving a space station, so I'm not sure how you're supposed to evade scans while carrying super ninja passengers.

Colder ship, nicely painted (scrapes and damage draw attention), but most importantly situational awareness and speed.

If you can read the radar and know where the cops are, you can boost past them, in or out. (Out is easier, though)

By leaving (or entering) the station as fast as possible (using boost/max speed) and/or as cold as possible (using Heat Sinks) and/or using Silent Running.
I tend to use all three.

Boost like hell! From sheer force of habit I always put the ship through the mail slot at about 100 when leaving the station, and hit boost as soon as I leave the airlock so that I'm out of range by the time security comes around to scan me. Works the vast majority of the time, once you have a ship that will boost over 300.

Coming into the station is a bit more difficult, and you'll again want to have decent thrusters. There are a few different methods, but I personally line myself up with the mail slot from about 8-10KM out, then boost as fast as I can towards it, request docking at 7.5KM, keeping boosting all the way up to the entrance and then hit full reverse thrusters as I'm just about to enter the slot. In my AspX, this will just about stop the ship without hitting the back of the station. Results may vary from ship to ship so I would definitely recommend having decent shields up.

Maybe I wouldn't recommend silent running to a complete newcomer, though. Especially on the approach.
They tend to bump into things. :)

Having an issue where even though I have the capacity I still can't accept passengers due to not having a high enough rank in something..

Do I need to find some dirty scrubby poor refugees who are desperate for anyone to transport to build my reputation? :O

Hahah, yes. Finding passengers willing to go with you if you don't have any reputation in the system can be hard.
You can try doing a couple of normal missions to get yourself at least to cordial or friendly standing. You can also raise your reputation by trading with the station or doing bounty hunting.

I just learned something new the hard way.
Had to take a passenger somewhere...
I have no clue where it is in the system.
I need a scanner to find the planet to take them to it! :O

Check if there is a Nav Beacon next to the star where you arrived.
If there is, fly there in supercruise, drop into the location (the same as if you would approach a station), target it (it's grey/white on the radar) and let your ship scan it. That will give you a complete system data and you should see your destination in system map and navigation panel.

Huh.... CMDR ???? in Ross 911 just killed me mid-transit. interdicted me two times. Flying a darned Orca. So watch out if you're transporting anything there.

Do you need a discovery scanner to scan the nav beacons?

Ow, sorry to hear that. :x
Well, if it happens again, you can always switch to Solo for the transit. That makes them really grumpy. :D

And no, you don't need any special scanner to scan a beacon.

Found out another thing.
I accepted a 7 passenger mission. took them to the destination point.
Couldn't turn it in.
Ended up needing to buy Cargo space to get the Cargo Reward when I turned it in. Wouldn't let me just turn it in and auto-liquidate the items or anything like that.

Whenever you can't turn in a mission, check your active ongoing mission on the Transactions tab. There would have been red text like 'Insufficient cargo space' within the mission description.

Just a little heads up; Naming (and shaming other players) is against rules in the forums. You can edit your post, with XX's like I've done in the quote to hide the name, with the edit button under the post. (Might save you getting a message from a moderator and just for future reference).

Well done on how you're doing with passenger missions, ED has a steep learn curve. Nice going Cmdr.

Tip: before you start flying - check on map if you can access destination system map. If you don't have the data you can simply purchase it from the station you get the mission. Open star map, find destination system and look for a "purchase system data" option. The most expensive I bought was like ~600 cr. Ususally it was 200-400 range.

Yeah, some passenger (and info) missions reward some materials next to credits. If you don't have enough cargo space for that you can't turn mission in. Exactly for the reason you stated - to prevent auto-liquidate stuff. Imagine there's something you actually need but due to lack of cargo game auto sells it to the market with no buy-back option. Oh the rage...

I'm thinking of upgrading to a Keelback and putting in a fighter bay + passenger cabins or some such perhaps.

Um...so right now the main issues I'm having is that PAssengers really don't give a lot of money(10-30k, most I've gotten is 40k for a three jump trip for carrying 7 guys). Will I only be able to get any real money for Passengers if I take the super risky illegal guys who'll get me in deep water with the cops?

Also:
Does moving passengers do anything to the game reality/world?
I ask this because a few of my trips have been moving Aid Workers to places with Outbreaks. Is this actually impacting the outbreak or is it just fluff?
