Horizons Passenger mission. How close must I be to scan the NAV beacon?

I am doing a passenger mission. Went to very close to the NAV beacon (about 50 km), but nothing happens. What should I do, how far away should I be from the NAV beacon in order to scan it?

You probably mean the tourist beacon?
You have to close on it in supercruise and drop down to normal space, just like you would when you're approaching the station, for example.
How close you need to be depends on the rating of your scanners, but it will be something between 5 and 7 kilometers. Target the beacon by "target ahead" button, or select it on the left panel from the Contacts screen and point your ship at it until the scan is finished.

If you are in Quince then you are flying through the atmosphere to get to the beacon, skirt around it.

On the other hand, if it is not Quince, let us know where you are and maybe we can help you.

Your most recent posts suggest you are already past this stage however, just so you know, it is often necessary to use the Discovery scanner just to identify the location of the tourist beacon.

I am currently in the Alpha Centauri system on my way to a tourist spot called "For the Mug"

Yup you guessed it I arrived at the system and realised I have been well and truly stitched up. The tourist spot is 6.8 MILLION light seconds from the system arrival point (That is 0.22Ly)

I always wondered just how fast it was possible to go in super-cruise within a system: Currently at 1,850C (1.8 thousand times the speed of light) and still accelerating with a distance of 0.11Ly still to go. Estimated arrival 33mins.
I expect to slow down as i approach the planet the tourist spot orbits.
My comms timestamp shows my last station stop was 45mins ago (hence why I am on Forums right now)

If any mission offers you the chance of 4mCr for a short trip and the passenger is NOT secretive or criminal, then YES there is definitely a catch.
REMEMBER in ED there is no such thing as a free launch!

OK now 0.10Ly away and begining to decelerate
Eta 27mins and distance has just changed to 3,000,000 Ls

Well, I got there, eventually. Turns out a distance OF 6,783,923ls takes about 90 mins in my Python.

I bought 30 mugs at Hutton Orbital, no I got to take them at least 160Ly to see how much I can get for them :)

Next passenger stop REORTE (which is, unfortunately only 113Ly away).

I would check out the salvageable debris on the plant surface, but this passenger mission is time dependent.

Maybe I'll come back here some time.......NOT!

I was fortunate not to be suckered into the Hutton Orbital run. Dont need to do it to say I did, I just dont care to do it. But did take a cargo mission at another place, dont remember where, but it was giving cracked Ind stuff, and at the time it was hard to get. When I jumped into the system realized it was 1.3 mil Ls away. Would of abandoned the mission critical cept for the cracked Ind stuff, so spent the 30 or so mins for the trip.

Ive heard the max speed achievable is 2010 or so, a take from the movie, I ain't ever got close to that, think I got up to 1200 once.

Well I got my 4MCr for the mission and picked up a bonus 350KCr selling the 30 Hutton Mugs. It would take a LOT more than that to have me go back there again.

This, I presume, is a passenger mission requiring you to scan a tourist destination beacon which is on a planet. You have to get down close to the planet surface (after Glide Mode) to target the beacon in normal flight mode (not supercruise mode). I suggest you keep your shields up for this because mountainous terrain can sometimes catch you out as you try to target the beacon. I can't remember off hand how close you must get, but target it and fly carefully toward it and, eventually, your scanner will scan it.

You might even choose to land and enjoy the view there. They are, after all, intended to provide interesting sights a lot of the time.

If you are really talking about a conventional NAV beacon, approach it and jump out of supercruise when your HUD gives you the blue message to jump out ...... target the beacon and fly towards it ... you will scan it soon enough. (But NAV beacons are not on planets.)
