Horizons Passengers for Diamondback Explorer

Was thinking for equipping my Diamondback Explore with a passenger cabin (can't fit much!) to act as a quick, deep space transporter. Or am I out of my mind?

Your out of your mind... Seriously though you'd be pretty limited with that ship. I've got an engineered T6 that I'm thing of using. Good boost speeds and the jump range is +30ly and a lot of internals.

Doesn't seem like a terrible plan? One of the best jump ranges but low on internal space, so alright on paper if you're not doing any exploring beyond system honks (and don't fly into a star).

I've not done any deep space exploring in mine so don't know how that holds up in practice, of course...

currently flying my first exploration passenger mission in my DBE.

it is a mission going to asteroid rings 1200 ly away, so i don't mind having no SRV.

i could do that mission in 1 hour if i would race it (i don't).

so, for shorter exploration missions i think it is brilliant.

small fuelscoop size of the DBE is zero problem with the new arrival points in systems.

the only problem is to find a mission you can fly with a class 4 passenger cabin. i had a first class and a bussiness class installed and needed to inspect several mission boards.

after picking up the mission, i had my fuelscoop and a scanner transferred, which i swapped for the second cabin and the cargo rack (you need cargo to accept mission with cargo reward).

disclaimer: i love the DBE. i have an exploration courier and explonda, too - i despise the AspE for exploration. of course AspE and t6 would make better exploration passenger mission runners. unbeatable for stacking is a conda. but DBE can do it - and most important is that you fly a ship that you enjoy flying.

I started out with equipping my Python for passengers instead of cargo.

It was nice, but then I decided to sell it and get an Orca with Luxury cabins.

The drawback with limited passenger space is that many of the missions have fairly low payouts, and you can't install Luxury cabins in anything but Orca and Beluga.

However, I might still buy and equip an Imperial Courier with a cabin and then fly some of those Criminal Masterminds and Rebel Leaders around. They have pretty decent payouts, and a Courier should be able to evade any interdictions :)

I would love to dive further into passenger missions but I keep getting myself snarled up. Either I build a bulk runner (A Keelback, btw, was an awesome passenger ship) and take exploration passengers, or I build a exploration passenger boat (I used the AspE) and get bogged down with short hops.

I have eyed that DBE a few times, she was my first exploration boat. Maybe I should try fitting one out. I just need to get my mindset out of 'bulk is profit' - I'm a shameless freighter pilot - into 'specialised, long range transport'.

actually, for those 3 destination passenger missions in the bubble, a DBE is quite perfect. it is hard to stack them anyway (because destinations need to be flown in the exact sequence of a mission), the DBE can jump far, it can run cold to bring illegal passengers into a station, it can fit 1 class 4 cabin (businness or first class), has a class 3 slot for mission cargo, a class 3 slot for a safety fuelscoop, big fueltank, okay shields ...

Since the Diamondback Explorer stopped being a good explorer with Horizons, I didn't have much use for it until I realized that it makes a fantastic passenger smuggler ship.

I've fitted and engineered mine to have a minimal heat signature and a few passenger cabins. When the mood strikes me I find some Criminal Masterminds or other secretive passengers and sneak them into their destination stations without any "Imperial entanglements".

I've been doing a bit of passenger missions, and I've also got a DBE with ~33 Ly range, and it wouldn't be a half bad idea in my opinion.

Even a 4 capacity economy cabin is decent money if you have an Allied faction to grab missions/passengers off. There's a few missions to tourism beacons (sometimes just one) that pay me upwards of 1 mil each (sometimes 2.5 mil). They usually haven't been taking more than an economy cabin either. I haven't been running them with my DBE, but it would make them quicker, since jump range is the key to the sightseeing template. It's probably not as effective for bulk passengers, but you could totally make it work for the sightseeing ones.

i collected data of 100 passenger missions from various boards. a class 4 business class allows you to pick up 57% of all the passenger missions i have tracked.

if i want to run some passenger mission, i go to a tourism/service economy where i am allied with some factions and some are on boom. i have a C4 first class, a C4 businness class and a C4 economy class transferred. if i see a mission i want to fly, i fit the right cabin.

Heh, never thought to do that. I'm only Allied with a High Tech/Refinery system so you've given me a good idea on what to work on next. [up]

I just started eyeballing the passenger missions, so please correct me if I'm wrong here - the ones I saw all said that the passenger(s) required a Minimum of X Class cabins. This leads me to believe that Economy passengers can be placed into Business/First Class cabins just fine, and so on. If so, then the only real limitation is how many spots you need for the mission(s), yes?

correct.

basically if you fit a class 6 first class cabin, you can play all missions <12 passengers, beside those that require luxury cabins (which can be only fitted on an orca/beluga).
